A Taste of Chicago

The New No. 2 posted a photo:

Chicago based architect Daniel Burnham was commissioned in 1898 to design this historic station in downtown Pittsburgh. It connected the Pennsylvania railroad to several subsidiary lines and was named Union Station.

I've been waiting to shoot this for several years. I love the detailed stone work throughout and the arches and dome are spectacular. You can imagine my disappointment when I arrived and found that they were in the middle of a repaving project. I felt a little like the Griswold's arriving at Wally World, but now I have another reason to return to Pittsburgh.

This is a 180 degree x 100 degree panorama stitched together from 135 individual images. The full size is 36000 px x 18000px and the print would be 10 feet long and 5 feet high without any enlargement.
Farnsworth House

The New No. 2 posted a photo:

As the story goes, one of the main reasons Dr. Farnsworth was never satisfied with Mies van der Rohe's design of her house was his use of travertine on the porches. In autumn the leaves would fall onto the porch and stain the semi-porous stone. I don't think she would like this picture very much at all despite the fact that the building is widely recognized as an iconic masterpiece of the International Style of architecture.

This continues my series of shots from 2009 that never quite made it up on flickr until now.

This old church on Chicago's north side has long sat empty. Over the years there have been several parties that have come forth and offered to save the building but for one reason or another the deals always fell apart. Earlier this year a deal was seemingly struck at the last minute to convert the main building into senior housing. But since the announcement progress has been slow moving and technically the archdiocese still owns the building and has a permit for its demolition.

Whatever the outcome it seems unlikely that this view will remain much longer.

The native resolution of this stitched image is about 12,000 x 10,000 pixels. In other words you could make a tack sharp print that would be about 40 in x 33 in.

Inside an abandoned Detroit church the ivy sneaks its way through the cracks of an old window. Slowly this place is succumbing to the elements.
Michigan Central Station's Once Great Hall

You really should see this pic huge. Click here.

After being out of service for more than 2 decades, the Michigan Central Station's Great Hall is falling apart. This building was once the tallest train station in the world but now is nothing more than a meeting ground for the homeless, scavengers, vandals, urbex photographers, and judging by the markings on the walls paintball enthusiasts. The city council of Detroit voted in 2009 to raze the structure though that is now in limbo.

This room is enormous in scale. Nearly an entire city block long and 5 stories high it is a cavern. water damage has taken its toll and the tiles that once adorned the ceiling arches have fallen in some areas, and some of the stone walls themselves have been ripped off their backings by eager scrappers.

The cost estimates to renovate this once gorgeous building range from $80 to $300 million. Anyone want to take odds on that happening?

For the record this is a 12 image stitch that spans about 450 degrees. Some may ask why more than 360 degrees? Because it looks more balanced this way.
