Someone had walked across the ice a day or a week before me, his or her feet sinking into the snow or slush. Some of the footprints had partially filled with water. It had all frozen solid. The air had never been above freezing for 3 months. What had thawed the ice? How had the water formed?

In some places it's clear that liquid water flowed back over the snow crushed by the snowmobile and froze smooth.

Where did the water come from?

One idea is that the overlay of snow squeezes the ice down, and forces water up through cracks that form as ice contracts when it gets really cold. This water can't lose heat to the ice, being effectively the same temperature, or to the snow, which both acts as a blanket and insulates it, and presses down on the water, keeping the freezing temperature below zero. So you land up with a layer of ice-cold slush between the ice and the snow. It's possible that the water immediately under the snow will freeze, making a thin crust that effectively slows or prevents further heat loss from the water into the snow.
