This view is looking south. The weather on the Malvern Hills can be volatile, and the tops become cloud covered in wet weather. From this height, you can easily see rain clouds or patches of sun travelling across the terrain. It is a wonderful place to be, even on a 'dull' day. The EXIF data says the camera was at 18 degrees celsius. Lucky old camera, it felt colder to me!

This well painted scene on the shop blinds is an accurate representation of the area. The shop front is situated up the left hand road in the picture; if you were to move about 10 metres to the right of the camera position, the painting illustrates what you would see.

Sixteenth Century tomb effigies at St Cuthbert's Church, Holme Lacy, Herefordshire. John Scudamore died in1571. This is an alabaster tomb effigy.
Lady Sibell is also known as Sibill Scudamore and Sybil Scudamore.
The Scudamore family were the local nobility in this area from 1419 until 1909. Sir James Scudamore (1568 - 1619) was used in Spencer's Faerie Queen (1596) as representing the ideals of chivalry. His armour is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

View from Rue Saint Jean, Bayeux, Normandy, France.
Bayeux Cathedral is the place where Duke Harold of England swore an oath to support William, Duke of Normandy in his claim to the English throne. Harold later claimed the throne for himself, precipitating the successful invasion of England by 'William the Conqueror' and his Norman forces in 1066. Many of the descendants of those Norman settlers, British and American, 'invaded' 'Normandy in 1944. Bayeux was the first major French town to be liberated in that action.

Longstone Lighthouse, formerly known as Outer Farne Lighthouse. From here local heroine Grace Darling set off with her father, in a terrible storm, in a rowing boat to resue sailors of the SS Forfarshire that had been wrecked a mile away. This was in 1838. They saved 9 but 43 were drowned before they could get there. The storm abated two days later. The Farne Islands are a major bird and seal sanctuary now.

This has been a settlement since Britain was occupied by the Romans. In the late 11th century the population was 125. The white building to the right is believed to be constructed on the site of the first Christian church which, being placed on the high point was obviously regarded as important. That high point 'rock' may be the origin of the name Ross - in fact the long winded name 'Ross on Wye' only became current in the 20th century. The later church's spire is clearly seen - in the graveyard is a memorial marking the site of a 'plague pit' where hundreds of plague victims were hastily burried.

May 2006. Preserved Great Western Railway steam loco number 2885, originally built in 1938-42 and now associated with the preserved steam railway at Tyseley, Birmingham, UK. (Moor Street is a working, main line British Railways station.)
The Birmingham Bullring building (hundreds of white circles) can be seen in the background. This is a major part of the grand shopping complex at the centre of Birmingham, which is the UK's 2nd largest city. The City has attempted to engender civic pride and to combine modernity with a respect for its past, particularly its industrial past. This is perhaps typified by the juxtaposition of the old steam train, with the new Bullring building in this picture.

Leicester is a vibrant city, lots of Victorian/Edwardian charm and opulence still in evidence in some of the buildings, but as a visitor the overall impression is one of chaos - which I think is conveyed in this picture of the little war memorial park.
