This beautiful (and hungry) birds come through my area in late April/early May on their way to higher climes for the summer. They are only here a day or two and I look forward to seeing them each year. We just happened to see this one at one of the sun-flower seed feeders this morning.

Another Swoope Lane sunset

I was determined not to miss the sunset tonight, so at 7:15 I headed over to Swoope Lane. This time, I was there in plenty of time to catch the sunset, however, the evening didn't present with that wonderful golden glow that we had last night. I am a sucker for flares, thus this offering.... The mountain to the right of the image is Jump Mountain.

San Jose Mission

This is the interior of one of the corner rooms of the mission. San Jose, known as the "Queen of the Missions" was founded in 1720 and served as a shelter for the native Indian population who was at risk of being decimated by the Apache and Comanche tribes. It was declared a National Historic Site in 1941 and remains an active Catholic parish today.

It was such a gorgeous day that we drove over to Craig County and walked the Fenwick Mining Trail and the Wetlands Trail as well.

We were fortunate that we suffered no major impacts from "Sandy". The local news had been full of dire threats of wind, flood and snow. The temperature dropped, we had some rain and a bit of wind, and just a skiff of snow. I am counting my blessings. I really feel for the folks who live in places that suffered the full force of the storm.

A friend of mine at Brickwood Kennel in Rockbridge has a litter of lab puppies - 8, I believe, although they wouldn't hold still long enough to count. All of them are black. At 5 weeks old, they are romping and tumbling all over each other. I wish I could have taken all of them home.....
We are keeping our daughter's chocolate lab pup (8 months) and of course we have our own black lab, Bess, (9 months), and so our household is full (with the two cats, horse and donkey). But these little guys were sure pulling on my heartstrings (and shoe strings, and jeans legs, and camera strap, and anything else they could reach!)

The resident spider enjoying an October sunset. The mountains in the back are Little House and Big House Mountain. When you view them from the east, they blend together into one big house shaped mountain, but they look very different when viewed from this spot near my house. My husband calls this the "washer woman" view of House Mountain. This particular shot doesn't show how beautiful the sunset sky was because I was focusing on the critter, but I hope to post a good sky shot soon.

We had a juvenile (a yearling) cooper's hawk fly into our glass door a few weeks ago (even though we have those reflective bird decals). I always rescue birds that do that - put them in a shoebox and see if they come to their senses and then let them go. When this guy flew into the door, I was standing right in the living room and it was a huge POW. So I ran outside. The hawk lay spread out on the terrace and my little cat had run over right to him and was eye-balling him as he lay on the bricks. I thought to myself "I wouldn't tackle that bird if I were you" but she really looked like she was thinking it over. I didn't have a shoe box big enough to put this bird in. So Jay came out and he found a good sized box. We threw a towel over the bird's head and Jay got him into the box which was kind of a triumph because the hawk kept turning around and looking at us and spreading his wings out as a threat. But he couldn't fly so we took him to the Wildlife Center which is about 45 minutes away from us. He had no broken bones, but did suffer a concussion and a hemorrhage in one of his eyes. He recuperated at the Wildlife Center for about 3 weeks and when he was ready to be released, Jay picked him up and brought him home. We released him into our woods and watched him circle and hunt for a bit and then roost in the top of a tall pine tree. I think he is glad to be home!

Jay and Bess go for a walk

Jay took his tractor and made a walking path for me through our woods (and a bit through the hay field). It's almost a mile and a half and is a true pleasure to walk at the end of the day. I have been trying to get more exercise and I think this will make a big difference. I carry my camera along with me, and a couple of evenings ago Jay and Bess joined me. I was snapping pictures along the way and I forgot to turn my camera off. As I walked a bit behind them, I kept hearing a clicking sound, and realized that my camera was bouncing along (on the strap around my neck) and the shutter was going off. I kind of liked this one, but I'm afraid I can't take credit for it as a photographer - totally random!
I'm off to a conference (at Virginia Beach) for a few days, so I'll try to come back with some good images. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Jay and I took a Sunday afternoon tour of several of the wineries in the area. We visited Wintergreen, Hill Top, and Veritas. Also visited a new cidery - Bold Rock. And had lunch at one of the local micro-breweries, Devil's Backbone. It was a gorgeous afternoon - not too hot and a bit breezy - and we had a great time. Now I just have to get ready to work this week. Ugh.

At the Daylily Festival on Sunday afternoon. A garden shop had a display of these reflective balls and of course I couldn't resist.

So many things to carry! Purse, entry badge, camera bag, sunglasses, bag with wine glasses (oh, did I mention there were 20 local wineries that had booths there?) I look a bit like a pack animal. Good thing I carried my smaller Panasonic camera rather than my hefty Canon.
