I Was an Exception

When I paid for my admission, the gentlemen there looked astonished, or perhaps a little surprised, that a single 30-something Oriental man, should show up at the manor house.

Indeed, I was the only person under the age of 60 I daresay who was visiting on that day. Well, guess I'm a bit queer after all.

This is the Stable Courtyard, built in the 1770s by the fifth Earl of Carlisle to the designs of famous York architect John Carr.

I cannot imagine what life would be like if I were the owner of such an estate. As much as it's a romantic, immensely weathy sort of lifestyle, estates like this came from a period when wealth was much more unevenly distributed than it is now.

English Landscape Garden

I'm much more a fan on the English landscape garden than, say, the French or Flemish formal geometric layout.

Castle Howard is comprised of more than 1,000 acres of gardens and lakes.

Castle Howard was the very reason that I decided to go to Yorkshire. I first saw photos of the manor house years ago, then like many others, I saw the TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, which was filmed at Castle Howard. Then I learnt that York is the nearest major town and planned my trip to York.

Considering all this, it was ironic that I almost cancelled visiting Castle Howard in order to revisit Whitby, Danby and Lealholm when I drowned my camera and I though I lost all the previous day's images. But then bad weather turned me back from Whitby, "forcing" me to return to my original plan to see Castle Howard. Perhaps I was meant to see it, and in the end I was very pleased by it.
