Fatally scene in full media view at the 2012 Rotterdam Marathon

Rotterdam - April 15th 2012 - During the 2012 edition of the Rotterdam Marathon a man (52) from Movistein, the Netherland, has died in short sight of the finish. This tragic accident happened in full view of 4 cameras and one photographer (me), just 350 meters before he would have finished his 42,195 km kilometer recreational run. Two police officers where immediately at the scene and used cpr without any success.

With regard to the race for professionals, Ethiopian athletes have dominated the windy 32nd ABN AMRO Marathon Rotterdam. After thirteen consecutive Kenyan victories Yemane Adhane finished first on the Coolsingel after 02.04.48. In the women grabbed the lead with fellow national Tiki Gelane in the best season time: 2.18.57. Only three athletes in the world had ever faster.

The Rotterdam Marathon has been the biggest one-day sporting event in the Netherlands for 12 years in a row. The world's top athletes are at the start on the Coolsingel, alongside thousands of other runners who also triumph, each in their own unique way. The marathon weekend is a wonderful blend of (top) sport and festival. There were 925,000 spectators along the course.

Running the marathon is getting increasingly popular. The number of participants reach new heights every year. Unfortunately, so do the accident. The scene you see here is actually a scene from a movie that was shot just after the end of the 2012 Rotterdam Marathon. The man the ground is an actor! However, with a big regret I have to report that one of the participants of the 10 kilometer run immediately after the finish became unwell and later in hospital of heart failure is deceased. It is a 14-year-old boy from Vught, who did the run with his school. My sympathy goes out to his family, schoolmates and other stakeholders.
Please be careful, and give training for the marathon your full attention! Lets hope this will stay movie scene for many of you!!

Oké, the situation is this. The road are barely coping with the flow of traffic. The railways have advised not to take the trains anymore; probably tomorrow as well. Most of the public transport in cities has come to a halt. And at the airport flights are largely subjected to big delays and cancellations. Even the airport’s website is snowed in(!), as it currently states: “Owing to the huge increase in visitor numbers on Schiphol.nl in connection with the wintry weather, the information on this website is not fully accessible.”

So, what’s left to do? Just have some fun and make the best of it. It’s healthy too. Even for me; the photographer, as I had to ran for this composition and timing.

This panorama is composted of 10 hand-held shots. Why so much for an obviously not so wide angle? This was due to the 24mil’s lens I used, which is not that great to make pano’s. So, I had to make sure I had enough overlap to cover all transitions.

Sunday, May 22, 2011 - The Hague - Timothy Kiptoo (Kenya) cut the tape for victory at 28:11 minutes, at the 10km running event "Sdu Royal Ten". Kiptoo enjoyed a commanding victory over fellow Kenyan Michael Mutai who finished at 28:21.

The Sdu Royal Ten is a 'competitional' and recreational running event, which is organized once a year This year in its 15th edition!

This running event is getting more and more popular every year. Runners with different backgrounds participate. Young and old, managers and lawyers, competition and recreational runners started on one of the three distances. A 10 km race, a 5 and 10km course for recreational runners and for children 1.5 km.

The track is downright royal as it circumnavigates the Royal Palace "Huis Ten Bosch". Therefore, the race is also known as the circle around the Palace. The event is organized by the The Hague Road Runners.
