With MFO Force Commander Major General Warren James Whiting . He's from Taumarunui, New Zealand. The Civilian Observers Unit (COU), where I've been working for the past year, has an annual medal ceremony.

This place was the center of my existence for nine months. I would be in here without fail 4-6 times a week--towards the end 6-7 days a week.

I worked up to where I would do 45 minutes on the elliptical followed by 35 minutes on a Lemond stationary cycle.

Pete is another State Department secondee to the MFO. He's a major gym rat and gave me a lot of motivation after I started trying to lose weight and get in better shape.

Here we are at the Dry Cactus Lounge--we discovered ping pong in my last week at the MFO. Way too late, because we really enjoyed it and our skill level is comparable, even though I kick his butt 90% of the time.

After 45 minutes on the elliptical, I would hit one of these bikes for 35 minutes. I didn't worry about tension, just adjusted it enough so that my heart rate would be in the 145-155 range.

I always tried to use the same machine so the readout would be consistent. I would get annoyed if someone else was using it, and wouldn't mind waiting up to 15 minutes if I had to.

I must have spent at least 200 hours on this one piece of equipment pictured here. Ellipticals are very effective for me. I think they get a bad rap as 'easy', but I'm soaked to the bone after I'm done.

Obligatory fat guy pants photo. 40 inch waist. At my heaviest, these fit snug. No belt. I went from my heaviest ever at 237 pounds on 29 October 2011 to 179 pounds on 29 July 2012.

Surprisingly decent pizza at this stand near the Fish Monument/Hwy 66 intersection in Ras Sudr. Medium/large costs 18 Egyptian pounds ($3).
