I got permission to follow an ER nurse around for an hour, as my goal was to emulate W. Eugene Smith, a great photojournalist.

After showing four photos in class I decided to create a mock magazine spread, sort of my own little photo essay.

This "cute" little octopus lives at the Seattle Aquarium. The tank is round, and the room is dark, so shooting this was quite a challenge. I guess I got lucky in this case.

Butchart Gardens around Christmas... wow! Among other things, we followed the twelve days of Christmas.

I'm seriously thinking about buying a season pass, because this is just an amazing place, and apparently photographers are allowed to take their time and shoot at will.

I went to the studio one morning, with the ingredients for a sandwich, and after almost three hours of "hair and makeup" as well as trying out different light setups and perspectives, this was the outcome.

My friend and classmate, Yulia, subsequently ate my model... and complained afterwards that it hadn't contained any meat at all.

I was playing around with a smoke machine a few weeks ago. It is a fun thing to use, but an easy thing to abuse.

You can interpret the photo in any way you like.

Space needle reflection

We went to Seattle on New Year's Day, and among other things, we took a walk around the Space Needle. This shot of the Needle, where it is reflected in the Science Fiction Museum, is probably close to being a cliche, but still...

Oh, and by the way, this is shot handheld at 1/20 sec.

A yellow... um... fish

Shooting fish through the glass or plexiglass of a fishtank is not easy. The slightest angle screws up the focus, and the fish are not ones to obey orders like "stay right there" or "hold that pose".

The ghost at Butchart Gardens

We went to Butchart Gardens on the 23rd of December. The light display was simply awesome.

My son inadvertently turned himself into a ghost in this photo. I like accidents like that.

A school assignment; photograph a line from a song. I picked an Icelandic song, Frelsarans slóð, by Bubbi Morthens.

The song is an attack on war - perhaps religious war more than anything - be it a war between two nations or two people.

I based my shot on the following:
Það fossar blóð í frelsarans slóð,
en faðir, það er vel meint.

A literal translation would be something like this:
Blood flows in the saviour's trails,
but father, it is well meant.

I had a desert shot in mind, but the heavy rain in Victoria, as well as lack of yellowish brown sand, prevented that.

Snorri, my model, then suggested going to Fort Rodd Hill, and that's where we went.

I'm pretty happy with the outcome, although there is still a lot of room for improvement.

On a side note, has anyone noticed the blood, which I created on the morning of the shoot? ;-)

This is my classmate, Jennifer. I took this portrait of her on Bastion Square in Victoria, BC, a few days ago, as a part of a Fundamentals assignment.

Her face is reflected off a 70-200mm lens.

I think it is a fitting portrait of a future photographer.

As part of an assignment for Composition and Design class, I drew an emotion from a bag (interpret that sentence any way you like).

I drew "fear".

This is the outcome, although after a discussion with my instructor, one of my outtakes might have been a better choice.
