Sayed Ali Shah in his Photographic Shop, Leh, Ladakh, India ~ 1981

His family used to trade between China and Kashmir but were forced to flee their home in China, he told me he had to leave behind thousands of negatives.

His photography is wonderful for the quality of the images and also for its historical content.

His prints were made using a Daylight Enlarger - see here: www.earlyphotography.co.uk/site/entry_D23-0.html

One of his cameras was a Zeiss Ikon Contax - possibly one that was made specifically for export to China - see: www.pacificrimcamera.com/pp/zeiss/contax/contax1.htm

Winter Sun reflects off a heavy frost on the Great Flat Lode - Grenville Mines - Lower Condurrow - Cornwall.

Not posted for a long while - this is from Dec 2010 - taken on The Great Flat Lode, Lower Condurrow, Troon, Cornwall. Part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

The Great Flat Lode is so named because the lode was remarkably flat and not steeply inclined like so many other mineral seams.

I thought I would have a play at a Black and White conversion from the Digilux 3 RAW file.

Rose Murphy, 76, playing the fiddle at her home in Maltby. Paddy, her husband, a former coal miner, is reflected in the mirror. Rose, was born in 1900 into a very musical family in Milltown, County Galway, her brother was P.J. Conlan, the famous melodeon player.

This picture was taken during recordings for an LP entitled Rose Murphy Milltown Lass. "The album delightfully recaptures the dancing repertoire styles of her youth in the West of Ireland." * Some samples of her playing from this record can be heard here: www.7digital.com/artists/rose-murphy/milltown-lass/

Allotments, Pengegon ~ Cornwall

When I took this photograph in the early 1990s there were huge concerns regarding the loss of Amenity land for Development.

These Allotments were under threat as the land they occupy is designated for housing. In the background a new Housing Scheme was encroaching on this precious space.

The Photograph was part of my submission for the exhibition ~ In a Different Light ~ 1994, Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro.

Government paves way for sale of country's 300,000 allotments as plot-holders revolt over plan to scrap historic right to council land

The century-old right of people to demand an allotment from their council may be abolished by the Government under plans to scale back red tape, it emerged yesterday.

Eric Pickles, the Communities Secretary, is examining plans to free local authorities from a 103-year-old obligation to provide plots of public land for cultivation by gardeners. The proposals could see local authorities, many of them strapped for cash under government-imposed cuts, selling off allotment land for social housing or even for profit to major companies.

The move has triggered a wave of protest from allotment society members and gardeners, who have lobbied Mr Pickles to rethink the plans."
