Reflected Chaos

Everything seems to be a little chaotic at the moment, and the dark evenings mean I can't get out after work.
I had a full week off work last week, with no plans except to get out with the camera and it already seems a long time ago!
Anyway, this is a shot from last week, of the waterlogged heath at Studland. Somewhere in this picture, the sky meets the water!

The view from Durlston Castle is quite amazing, on a clear day you can see for miles and miles.
The Needles lighthouse is about sixteen miles away and the one at St.Catherine's Point at the southern end of the Isle of Wight is twelve miles further than that.
The limit of your view is perhaps the chimneys at Fawley which is about thirty miles away. Not bad for the price of a car park ticket and a cup of coffee!

This picture has been used in a brochure for my Purbeck Footprints stuff and was taken at Peveril Point, one of my favourite places. I'm not too fond of having my photogragh taken and that makes publicity shots difficult. I wonder if Simon King could stand in for me?

Today was the naming ceremony and dedication of the D class lifeboat D-752 Phyl & Jack.
This took place at the Swanage lifeboat station and was very well attended.
It is always good to see the R.N.L.I. so well supported, everyone concerned does a cracking job!

Swanage Lifeboat Week has almost fnished and yesterdays fund raising events seemed to go very well.
Music, beer and a bbq meant that I was never going to go too far from the action but apart from that, it is always good fun watching our lifeboat crew enjoying themselves.

Weather permitting, I have a field trip planned for the middle of the week and so today was a good time to see how my potential subjects were getting on.
Durlston is a great place to visit at any time of year, but now the meadows are bursting with flowers and countless little beasts and bugs.

I have been watching these Herring Gulls for a while as it seems to be one of the few that have a nest in view of the path (well, with a little leaning).
I arrived too late to see the chicks in the Sun though, which was a shame, but it is always good to see them

As a new day dawned and the Sun released itself from the shackles of a white tipped horizon, a ship appeared.
It had sheltered, protected by the dark of night as well as by the cliffs of our bay, before braving Old Harry and the race into the harbour.
The Lord Nelson is now back in this place, silent and almost motionless on a grumbling sea, waiting for the night and the mist to make her invisible again.

We had to leave the Wrens before they had finished singing but as there was a break in weather we decided to carry on.
There were plenty of Terns in the bay, but no sign of the Dolphins or the Seal that had been over the last couple of days.

Singing In The Rain

This mornings walk was a little damp and more than a little windy.
Not a great day for taking photographs but whilst sheltering in one of the old gun emplacements at Peveril Point we were entertained by a family of Wrens.
The rain didn't stop them making a racket and they were great fun to watch.

Meadows Or Rocks

So what do you call a Pipit that lives in the meadow and on the rocks? My money is on a Rock Pipit, but I have been caught out before and so this one is just a Pipit! Neither Rock nor Meadow.

The Seagull Cafe, at the old Pier Head in Swanage serves the finest coffee in town and the view is superb! Before the rains came, their roses were looking pretty good too.

I have been watching this Herring Gull for a while now, waiting for a glimpse of the youngsters.
Today, for the first time, we saw three chicks tottering between the pots with no space for mum to sit.

A slightly more natural home than a chimney stack and perhaps a better place for a young Herring Gull to grow up.

Summer Meadows

Today was just about perfect for enjoying the meadows at Durlston. The breeze made the flowers and grasses move like a hilltop ocean.
Beautiful colours and an incredible amount of life means there is always something to photograph.

Dinner With A View

The Durlston Kestrels were very active again with both male and female showing off.
Dinner for one was not the popular choice though and tempers flared.

Swallow Hotel

The chapel at St. Aldhelm's Head was build about 800 years ago may have started life as something else. Thought to be built within a pre-christian circle, it may have been used as a beacon in its early life. Now, more importantly perhaps, it has become home to a family of Swallows. Nearby there is also a breeding pair of Peregrines, plenty of Wheatears and a choir of Skylarks.

Skylarks are beautiful little birds but are not easy to get a shot of. They appear as if out of nowhere and rise straight up into the sky.
