The magnificent Trading Hall of Valencia's Llotja de la Seda (Silk Exchange). A latin inscription in the dark band around the walls can be translated thus, "I am an illustrious house built in fifteen years. Try and see, fellow-citizens, how negotiation is such a good thing when there is no lie in the speech, when it swears to the neighbour and does not deceive him, when it does not lend money with an interest charge for its use. The merchant who acts this way will prosper galore and at the end he will enjoy the eternal life." Lending money without interest? There's a crazy thought for you!

Detail of a spiral staircase within Valencia's stunning late-medieval Llotja de la Seda. Unfortunately, the stairs were gated off, as I've seen some beautiful photos looking down from the top of the stairs - beautiful!

Pews in Palma Cathedral brilliantly lit by light through the huge rose window above the altar. Strangely, almost no one in the cathedral seemed to notice this gorgeous light, preferring to look at the side altars and chapels instead. Christine and I were enthralled by it, often waiting many minutes for the sun to come out from behind the clouds in order to catch this beautiful, colourful display.

Experimenting with textural overlays. This was originally a very dull exposure taken on a very grey day. I feel that this treatment has certainly made a more striking image!

Portico and Loggia

The remarkable gothic facade of Venice's Palazzo Ducale. Each arch of the ground level portico supports two of the first floor loggia. Founded in the C9th, much of the present palace dates from the C14th and 15th.

Nîmes Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor de Nîmes) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Nîmes, dedicated to the local saint Castor of Apt.

It was the seat of the Bishops of Nîmes until 1877, when the name was changed, and is still the seat of their successors the Bishops of Nîmes, Uzès and Alès.

The cathedral is believed to stand on the site of the former temple of Augustus. It is partly Romanesque and partly Gothic in style. (Wikipedia)

The single tower of Strasbourg's magnificent cathedral can be seen from just about anywhere within the city. A second tower was planned but never constructed.

Another view of Strasbourg's superbly beautiful cathedral. The soaring north tower, completed in 1439, was the world's tallest building from 1625 (when the spire of St Olav Tallinn burnt down) until 1847 (when St. Nikolai's Church in Hamburg was erected).

Portal, Cathedrale St-Sauveur, Aix-en-Provence

The cathedral of Saint-Sauveur, which dates from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries, is situated in the northern part of the Old Town of Aix. It is preceded by a rich portal in the Gothic style with elaborately carved doors, and is flanked on the north by an uncompleted tower. The interior contains tapestry of the 16th century, other works of art and a baptism pool from the fourth century.

Often overshadowed by the more famous Cathedral, the former Abbey Church of St-Pierre is a quite stunning example of the early French Gothic style. Its oldest element is a C10th tower/donjon (keep) at its western end, in which the monks could take refuge if the Abbey was attacked.

Lanercost Priory

Situated in the Irthing Valley near Brampton in north east Cumbria, Lanercost priory was founded by Robert de Veaux during the reign of Henry II in 1166 to house Augustinian Canons. The nearby Hadrians Wall provided a source of building material and the Priory was completed in 1220. Being near to the Scottish border the Priory had a troubled history and was ransacked in 1296 by William Wallace. The Priory was not a wealthy house.
In 1536 Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in Britain and Lanercost Priory was finally dissolved on 8th January 1538. The valuable lead roofing of the chancel, transepts, tower and chapels was removed and only the foundations remain of the chapter house and dormitory. The cloister arcade has also disappeared.

The nave of the priory now serves as a parish church, with clear glass behind the altar showing through to the ruins behind. The rest of the property is administered by English Heritage.
