Hello Regional Connector Team,

Keep one of the TBM as a tunnel exhibit

This is just an idea, but a cool one at that. I would like to see a TBM in person on display. The 4th St/Flower entrance will be a long tunnel to the 7th St/Metro station. Therefore, the boring machine, just one of them is usually dumped into the ground, forever buries, am I right? Don’t do this to one of them please!!! Can we set up a permanent display of this machine somewhere in the pedestrian tunnel between 4th St and 6th St with lights on it. I mean, I would like to see the TBM behind a glass window so while the pedestrians are walking in this tunnel to 7th St./Metro, they can easily see this humungous machine off to the right or left. A machine that’s been through hell digging and plowing just sitting there deteriorating. I think this will be an awesome display. That TBM can forever be known as the machine that connect two rail lines that were on separate systems into one system.

Just an idea!

Hills St. Busway

The following idea, I do not know who to forward this to. Please forward the following to whoever handles this type of request. Or, include this idea as part of the Regional Connector. Thank you.

Hill Street is probably the least used street in Downtown L.A. during rush hour.
Broadway is a two way street that is going to become a nightlife street and plenty of refurbished building with lofts and condos.
Main and Los Angeles, Grand and Olive, Flower and Figueroa are ONE WAY streets.

So, let’s look at HILL ST. I think it should be renamed to METRO ST, at least between Cesar and Washington Blvd.

Hill St., between 1st St. and Washington Blvd. should become the main hub for all MTA, Foothill Transit Silver Streak, Silver Line, and other MUNI buses can travel. BUT, the number of buses that go downtown should be reduced as well. Here’s how!!!

Most local buses coming into downtown from the south west side should go make a left on Hill St. until it reaches Ceasar. Once at Ceasar, make a right, make a right at Alemeda, into Union Station. Buses from here can get onto Ramirez for layover.

Most local buses coming into downtown from the south side should use either Washington Blvd. or Venice Blvd. to get onto Hill St. going north until it reaches Ceasar. Once at Ceasar, make a right, make a right at Alemeda, into Union Station. Buses from here can get onto Ramirez for layover.

Most local buses coming into downtown from the north west side should go Hill St. either from Cesar, Temple, or First St, make a right on Hills St. South of Washington Blvd, these buses can layover here.

Most local buses coming into downtown directly from the west or east can go east/west on 5th St. and 6th St. only. As part of the 4th St. tunnel for the Regional Connector off of Flower, there should be another entrance between 5th St. and 6th St.

Silver Line and Silver Streak – Coming from the east side, go into Union Station, go north on Alemada, go west on Ceasar, go south on Hill St., right on 7th St., left on Flower St, Silver Streak can end its route at or near Staples Center, Silver Line can end its route at or near Staples Center if the route does not call for I-110 run, Silver Line can then continue on its usual route southbound. The Silver buses (MTA and FT should be the only buses on Hill St. allowed to make a turn on 7th St. because it is a different kind of rapid bus. The 460 is the other exception which can follow the same route as the Silver buses.

On Hill St., the main bus stops should be:
1.Between 1st St and Spring for the courts and legal library areas
2.2nd St. with pedestrian access tunnel to Regional Connector stop at Spring St/Broadway/2nd St
3.Between 5th St and 6th St. for the buses that are east/west on these streets
4.Between 7th St. and 8th St. which is one of the main strips in Downtown L.A. – south side of 7th St. because the street car needs room for track turn here.
5.Between Olympic Blvd. and 11th St.
6.Pico Blvd.
7.Washington Blvd.

On 5th St. and 6th St., it is not a dedicated busway, but all buses travelling east/west can travel here. The main hub can be somewhere near the Greyhound Station if needed for some buses.

Through Downtown – LADOT can provide local downtown service throughout, especially in areas that the proposed streetcar does not run.
This will only work ONLY if they reduce some of the buses going into Los Angeles as well.

I-10
Lines 480-498 should be decommissioned altogether (Foothill Transit and MTA). NO MORE.
Line 485 should stop at the old 256 Cal State L.A. Busway stop (the one ontop). 485 can then follow 256 to Valley unto Fremont. 485 will become a local route number, eliminating 485 number.
Line 487 can become a local route from El Monte only following the same route to Del Mar and Garvey.
Line 489, I have no idea how you can do this one, but if not possible to alter, no need to change. So, 489 will remain the same.
All 480 and 490 series MTA and Silver Streak can become either 500 series buses or 100 or 200 series buses with terminus at El Monte Busway only.
The only buses that can travel on the I-10 Expressway is Silver Line, 489, and Silver Streak. This will increase ridership of the Silver buses.

I-110
Lines 440 and 450 series should be decommissioned.
Exception: Line 460, do not alter it. Have it follow the Silver buses routes as described above.
All MUNI bus systems (Torrance and Gardena) will have to create ONE BUS (like Silver Line and Silver Streak) that will provide the same service that the local buses provide to Downtown L.A. Ideally, the bus will drop people off at the I-110 busway station. The riders can continue the trip on the Silver Line.
Orange County buses must terminate at Norwalk Station via of Norwalk Metrolink Station. Both OC701 and OC721. If this causes some agreement issues between MTA and OCTA, then let it go. At least make it follow the Hill St. busway.
LA DOT 448 should terminate at the Artesia Transit Center.
Line 450 should be replaced by the Silver Line to provide once an hour service during non-rush between Artesia Transit Center and San Pedro. 450 should end where the red car is in San Pedro. Let 246 take over the more local routes within San Pedro.
Torrance 1 and 2 can begin service at the Harbor Fwy/I-105 freeway park and ride area.
Line 754 (not line 45) should continue south on Vermont to the Artesia Transit Center, still providing limited stops at Rosecrans, Gardena, and Artesia.

5th St. and 6th St. flyers:
Montebello 40, 340 series, and 50 must use these streets only, turnaround can be at Bixel St. This is mostly buses coming from the east side.
Since 5th and 6th St is not a dedicated busway, to make the stops more attractive is street art and sidewalk art.

LADOT: If LADOT is not able to provide around Los Angeles transportation around Downtown, this can be something new for MTA to implement. Purchase smaller buses, much like the shuttles in Downtown Long Beach. I believe that the street car will help some of the transportation in Downtown. But on streets were the street car does not run, the shuttles can provide that traffic. The shuttles should somehow make easy connectivity with the Hill St. Busway.

Local traffic on Hill St: Making travel not so appealing on Hill St. is the single lane with many signals. There is a pedestrian signal in between each intersection. Mostly this lane can be used for access to parking lots along this road. People can use Broadway for this instead. The single lane should not be interrupted if someone does travel all the way through it. However, it may not be easy to make left turns on certain intersections because of the busway and the room allowed for it.

The busway should be built along with the busway and should open in the same amount of time.

Cost: Not too high. Repaving the entire strip would make it attractive. Adding some street art pieces and side art pieces. Re-do the sidewalks. Plant a few more trees. Creating the curbs for the busway in the middle. Repainting the roads. Restructure the lines that will travel up and down Hills St.

MTA Line 1-99 buses that could become local routes 100 and 200 series can somehow merge terminate at the train stations and some of the south side of downtown buses can also provide access to the busway at Washington/Hill. Buses coming from the north east side can terminate at Union Station directly with no access to downtown.

This will increase ridership of the subway and regional connector. This will alleviate bus traffic in downtown. I just think this will be a better solution for downtown in general.

Thank you.

I live in 85041 of Phoenix Arizona. This photo was taken in 1993 when the Metro Red Line opened in Los Angeles, California. At Union Station, there were a lot of excited people who wanted to try the new subway for the first time.

Noticed the banner in the upper part of the picture. RTD, the rough touch and dangerous, actually Rapid Transit District. Before MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority), RTD used to be the name of the bus system in the Los Angeles Country area.
