The Tragic Story Of C-47 "The Flying Dutchman"

I came across this story and photos on the website of the National Museum of the USAF while tracing my Dad's time with the 41st Fighter Squadron. By coincidence I found the article the day before the 70th Anniversary of the event. The Flying Dutchman, nose number 564, flew with the 33rd Troop Carrier Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Group, 5th Air Force and this accident was one of their first missions in New Guinea. They departed Port Moresby, where my Dad was stationed at the time, and it would be the first wartime loss for the 33rd TCS.

The troops they were carrying were with the 126th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division. They were the first US Army land forces to arrive and fight in New Guinea. Their C.O. Colonel Lawrence Quinn was killed four days earlier when the 6th TCS C-47 he was on was attempting the Carrier Group's first parachute assisted supply drop of the war and the chutes fouled the elevators. These actions were part of the Kokoda Track Campaign which Australian and American forces had driven back the Japanese advance on Port Moresby.

----
On Nov. 10, 1942, the C-47 nicknamed The Flying Dutchman (S/N 41-18564) hit a strong down-draft over the Owen Stanley Range while carrying U.S. Army troops from Port Moresby to Pongani, New Guinea. It crashed into the side of Mount Obree, killing seven of the 23 onboard and destroying most of the food it carried. Of the 16 survivors, eight received serious injuries and burns.

Realizing that rescue probably depended upon going for help, the survivors sent out a team of four men on Nov. 12. Three days later, another four-man team departed for help in another direction. Eight men remained with the plane, only one of whom was physically able to carry water for the other seven badly injured personnel.

The first team encountered unbelievable hardships and difficulties in the mountains and jungle. While attempting to float down a river on logs, two men were swept away, never to be seen again. Finally, after 32 days, the surviving two men found help. The second party encountered similar hardships, but they all reached the coast on Dec. 14, 1942.

Based upon the meager information provided by the first two men, a search party was dispatched to find the crash site by back-tracking the escape route. After about eight days, it had to abandon the search when its native porters stole all the provisions and disappeared into the jungle.

Aerial reconnaissance missions flew over the general crash area without success, but eighteen months later, in July 1944, the crash site was discovered. A rescue party went to the location, only to find the eight crash survivors dead.

Ironically, searchers looking for another downed airplane rediscovered The Flying Dutchman in 1967, and they found this door (see photo below). The notes written on it reveal the tragic hopes of those who had been waiting for a rescue that came too late. The last entry was made on Jan. 1, 1943, and what happened afterward and how long the last man lived will probably never be known.

Photo Dad brought back from WWII. This could have been taken October 22, 1942 when my Dad had leave from the 41st Fighter Squadron USAAF in New Guinea. I believe this is Flinders Street. This trip was to take 10 days leave to Townsville but Dad instead traveled to Sydney to marry my Mom. Dad had requested permission from his C.O. to marry but was denied, so Dad not only disobeyed orders but also went AWOL.

Unfortunately it's hard to get a clear shot of the Moon with all the light pollution in Houston. But this is how Neil would have seen it at NASA Johnson Space Center. Also, the Moon travels fast! Try taking a close up of it some time, its not that easy.

My NASA Johnson Space Center, Neil Armstrong, tribute video I made three years ago. I apologize for its crude production value as I was just learning to shoot and edit.
My NASA Kennedy Space Center tribute. Also from my NASA Space Center Pilgrimage I made three years ago when I drove coast to coast to watch a Space Shuttle launch.

July 10th, 2012: 1st flight 70th Anniversary

The Douglas A-26 Invader (designated B-26 between 1948–1965) was a United States twin-engined light attack bomber built by the Douglas Aircraft Co. during World War II. The first flight of a A-26 was on July 10th, 1942. They also saw service during several of the Cold War's major conflicts, famously in the Bay of Pigs Invasion. A limited number of highly modified aircraft (designation A-26 restored) served in combat until 1969.

The redesignation of the type from A-26 to B-26 has led to popular confusion with the Martin B-26 Marauder. Although both types used the R-2800 engine, they are completely different designs. The last A-26 in active US service was assigned to the Air National Guard; that aircraft was retired from military service in 1972 by the US Air Force and the National Guard Bureau and donated to the National Air and Space Museum.

23 airworthy examples remain of the 2,452 built. The "Million Airess" flies for the Lone Star Flight Museum located on Galveston Island Texas. The LSFM A-26 has a "bombardier nose" but you can see the other nose variant below on the A-26 that I visited at the Evergreen Air & Space Museum, their A-26 is also airworthy.

After it was stricken from the active roster, BuNo 121881 became one of twenty-seven F4U-5, -5N & -5NL Corsairs sold to the Argentine Navy where it served in the 2nd Attack Squadron of the Esquadrilla Aeronaval de Combate until 1965.

In 1968, BuNo 121881 was selected to serve as a monument in the Argentine city of Trelew. It was mounted atop a concrete pedestal there where it remained on outdoor display for 21 years.

In 1989, Bob Waltrip purchased the Corsair for his ‘Lonestar Flight Museum’ and had it relocated to Ezell Aviation in Breckenridge, TX for a complete restoration back to airworthy condition. It emerged from the shop three years later wearing the famous colors of Lt. Guy Bordelon's Korean War-era F4U-5N “Annie Mo” and remains an active participant on the US air show scene to this day.
