Natural Selection

Todd Klassy posted a photo:

A unique metal sculpture of a dinosaur outside of Rudyard, Montana.

Rubber necking is dangerous here in Montana. Unfortunately for me its how I earn my living as a photographer.

Why is rubber necking so dangerous? For one, the roads aren't exactly the safest in the world. They have steep drop-offs and seldom does a road have a guardrail here where often they need one. 80 mph on a quite country road is not uncommon (there's a lot of state to cover). Also, the wind blows constantly and it is not unusual to find yourself steering into the wind to compensate for its pushing effect. I call this "windplaning." The effects are similar to hydroplaning. When you hit a big gust of air you need to be judicious with how you steer your automobile. If and when the wind suddenly stops (and believe me it stops just as quickly as it started), your car will lurch in the direction you were steering.

The good news is that there aren't as many cars on the roads in these parts. This means you don't have to worry about some moron behind you tooting his horn if you do something stupid while driving down the road. However, this will breed complacency. One minute you think you are all alone out in the middle of no where, so you opt for the infamous "asterisk turn" in the middle of a narrow road (too narrow for a Y turn), and the next minute you have some cowboy in a dirty truck right on your ass wondering why the idiot with the Wisconsin plates would be attempting a delicate move in the middle of his road. Lucky for me I can plead ignorance and pretend I'm a tourist. However, I changed to Montana plates this week, so that move will no longer work.

I consider myself a "drive by shooter." I like to explore. I often drive down the road looking for something that catches my eye. Not a terribly disciplined way to shoot, but rewarding nonetheless.

I didn't know what to name this one, so I thought about my other photograph of a roadside dinosaur (Evolution) and decided to give it a name within the same realm.

The beautiful Jerusalem Rocks outside of Sunburst, Montana.

I drove two hours to Sunburst, Montana in the wee hours last Saturday morning to visit a strange geological formation and landscape known to some as Jerusalem Rocks. Not many have seen this part of Montana; it is only a stone's throw from the Canadian border out in the middle of no where. And since the land is privately owned, most travel brochures mentioned it at all.

I had never seen anything like it in my life. Of course, I haven't been to Arizona yet either. Strange rock formations weathered over time. A landscape that surely took many thousands of years to create. About the only people that frequent this place, it seems, are the local high school. Evidence of past parties (i.e. broken beer bottles) litter the surroundings and foolishly they have etched their names into stone at places. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful site and I wish more people had an opportunity to see it.

This was just a scouting trip on my part. I will return to Jerusalem Rocks again over the next several months. If I can fit it into my schedule I will camp there for a weekend yet this fall so I can explore every nook and cranny. Then I hope to return again this winter when the strange rock formations are covered with snow. And a spring trip would be nice when the field in the valley below becomes green and perhaps with a model or two in tow.
