Oh Barf....Another Tourist

Day 1: Arrived in Montana early in the afternoon....picked up our rental SUV and went to the Rocky Mountain Outfitters to buy bear spray. I'd heard that there was a huge number of bears in Glacier NP and wanted some protection...just in case.

I was so excited about the possibllity of seeing a big Grizzly appear in front of me on a trail. But I also wanted to be prepared just in case we were charged.

Two days before we arrived a jogger was charged by two Grizzly's. Unfortunately he was alone and had left the spray in his vehicle. He was bitten twice but I hear that he's recovering well.

I believe in responsible photography....I would hate to think that my actions disturbed the normal behaviour of an animal or possibly made them more aggressive for the next person they encounter. While I like to get close, I also try to keep an eye on their behaviour for any signs of fear or aggression.

That happened with this Moose. After watching her for about an hour in West Glacier...I hadn't realized how much closer she had come to my position. At one point she raised her head, gave me a nasty staredown and started peeing in the water. I don't know a lot about Moose but I heard that could be a sign of aggression. I moved quickly around the SUV to put it between myself and the crazy moose. I decided that the photography session was over and left her to do what Moose do.

You think Pinky is trying to tell me something?

I was asked to help coax Pinky into his indoor enclosure last time I was there. We'd got the news that a bad storm was coming and they wanted to keep him safe and dry. They had tried and failed to get him in.

Easier said than done.

I tried coaxing him with a peanut. No dice.
Instead he started swinging everywhere and keeping as far away from me as possible.

Tried coaxing him with grapes. Nope....that's not working either.

Tried coaxing with an excited voice. Nope....too smart for that.
Instead he starts making happy noises as if he's mocking me. Runs over to me, gives kisses and he's gone again.

This is the face you get when you try and trick him into anything. The "seriously, you think I'm going to fall for that" look.

This is one stubborn monkey. I tried. I failed. Hope he didn't get wet :)

I hate to say it but I have officially been outsmarted by a monkey!

When I first started going up to Jungle Cat World years ago, I was scared of Pinky. He was always nice to my husband but whenever I tried to get close he'd shriek at me and reach out and grab me.

We finally developed a bond and now he's wonderful, but a word of warning:

This monkey is a serious Kleptomaniac. He will steal anything he can get his hands on. Sunglasses, wallets, jewelery, you name it....he wants it.
