The imagry of Christmas in Hong Kong is different. You will see Christmas trees and gifts but almost never a nativity scene. One major shopping centre has somehow merged reindeer and a carousel with Alice in Wondreland to create "Christmas" decorations. This shop featured a nymph decked in tinsel.

Amid the noise and bustle of Peoples' Park, the lotus pool offered some peace and quiet.

I later discovered that the crowds of people clustered in the park were anxious parents brokering marriages for their sons and daughters - often without their children's knowledge! A photo opportunity missed! Maybe next time.

One of the great pleasures of travel is to find the unexpected. These wonderful, majestic, human headed winged bull figures guard the entrance to a Zoroastrian temple in Mumbai. These figures are more commonly associated with ancient Assyria and Babylon.

Zoroastrians fled ancient Persia because of an Arab invasion and some found their way to Gujarat in western India. From there some obviously went to Mumbai. There were a number of examples of these remarkable sculptures around central Mumbai.

An intriguing bas relief angel-like figure at the City Palace in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. I searched Google to try to find out more about this figure but found nothing. If anyone knows anything I would be interested to know.

In the monsoonal gloom of Mumbai's Chhatrapatu Shiaji Station, you couldn't help but notice this small beacon of hope for the infirm.

Comfort for handicapped and cancer patients? Not necessarily. When I looked in car 12 it was full of freight.

This train was departing from the wonderfully gothic Chhatrapatu Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) in Mumbai. I was there on a Sunday afternoon and had the chance to use a tripod - something that would otherwise be very difficult in one of India's busiest railway stations.

This resourceful young fellow was using his English and easy smile to engage tourists outside a coffee shop in Dharamsala. I offered him some money for his time and kind cooperation after I took his photograph (working with the Rolleicord is a slow and deliberate process). He declined the money but asked if I would buy him some milk. He took me to a shop where the shopkeeper produced a bucket sized container of powdered milk and asked for a proportionately large sum of money! We compromised.

I am sure that this young fellow will be a very successful business man in 10 to15 years time.

Taken at the Norbulingka Institute near Dharamsala, N.W. India. The Institute was established to teach and preserve Tibetan culture.

Macau - the remarkable juxtaposition of old Europe and new Asia.

Macau was a Portugese colony from the 16th century until 1999. This old Portugese port city in southern China has many interesting reminders of the Portugese presence. Now it is famous for its casinos which make parts of the city look like Las Vagas.

We were in Yangon on a Monday and decided to enjoy the cool, quiet sanctuary of Swedagon Pagoda. According to legend, Swedagon was built 2,500 years ago. It is the most sacred pagoda in Burma (Myanmar).

Jac found a place to sit back and enjoy the ambience. As I sat, I noticed a group of men reverently polishing a brass Buddha. They asked me if I would like to join them. Soon I was carefull applying brass polish to a Buddha with them and then polishing it off to reveal a lustrous shine, enjoying the quietness of the moment.

They told me that they work as volunteers each Monday polishing the Buddhas of Swedagon. Sometimes on a Monday as I am caught up in the tangle of the world of work I think of polishing the Buddhas of Shwedagon.

Bronze ballerinas transform an otherwise utilitarian space in a Hong Kong railway station. The artist says that these sculptures are to draw our attention to the need for grace and mental discipline if we want to excel.
