As part of our annual trip to Delhi, India to meet family, we have often had to have a layover in one the many hyper-cities of Asia, be it Singapore, Seoul or Hong Kong. We are often tired after the arduous 16 hour coach class slog over the pacific too be enthused to be in another country. But, the glitter we saw from the sky, and the airport beckoned us to take a peek. So this year we stopped over in Hong Kong for three days.

Despite being aware of the intensity of Hong Kong (thank you Google street view), the intensity of the city hits you like a sledgehammer. Utterly relentless in trying to be sell you something, it was quite an experience that had both me and Preeti hunting small quiet places just to catch our breath. A small hillock park here, a temple compound there, gave time to pause and wonder how this onslaught of advertising, flashing lights and bajillions of retail outlets may have altered the psyche of residents. They probably consider themselves as commodities that need to be advertised see (case in point www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20085558). And how the immigrant and new residents would have to drastically adjust to the loud, and brazen capitalism mecca. And then this flashy sign caught my eye and I couldn't help smirking at the irony....

The word Bauhaus, screaming at you to buy something, seems so inappropriate, so out of place. Where is the serene simplicity espoused by the modernist philosophy of form follows function in Hong Kong ? Maybe its a new arrival, as it says..
