Stereoscopic view of the North Pole (without ice) based on images from GoogleEarth. Being used to the standard map projections makes you forget that the shortest distance between Europe/Asia and North America is over the North Pole. Sadly, this view of the North Pole without sea ice may become a reality as Global Warning returns the climate to something like the late Permian period.

Stereoscopic view of the Mediterranean Sea located between Africa and Europe based on images from GoogleEarth. The Mediterranean is all that remains of the ancient Tethys Ocean which formed some 350 mya. In more recent times it is believed that the Mediterranean Sea was cut off from the Atlantic Ocean and dried up, becoming a salt desert. Some 5 mya the Mediterranean Sea refilled and the Strait of Gibraltar was the site of an enormous waterfall as water poured in from the Atlantic in what is known as the Zanclean flood. As Africa continues its relentless move north, the Mediterranean Sea will disappear in some 50 mys, so hurry and book your cruise now!
