Seeing Leopards on Safari is always my absolute highlight.
I always get kind of nervous when photographing them, because the encounters happen so quickly. They move so fast, you see them and they might be gone. Like ghosts.

This leopard was hiding her two newborn cubs underneath that tree in the high grass.
At night she carried them up into a fork of the tree, where she had built a nest for the tiny, little cats.
I had time to set up for the shot, as she jumped into that position twice.

I must admit, that I was not 100% happy with the situation.
The cubs were really, really small, just a handful of a cat, still blind. We had a short climpse of them the day before, when they were hidden on an other place.
The mum relocated the cubs that day to this tree, as, I admit, she felt disturbed by the many cars surrounding her previous hide. This is imho a dangerous situation for the cubs, as there are so many enemys for such a tiny, helpless, animal. Even baboons will get them in trouble. Normally she would not relocate them that often, I guess. She will also have big problems to defend them.

There have been maybe 20 cars surrounding that hide just to get a climpse of the cubs, but they did not get to see them. Rangers came at one point and told the drivers that they wanted to restrict the time spent at the sighting to 20 minutes, which does not help. It causes just more movement and harrassment.

As we left Ndutu the next day, we heard on the radio, that she was relocating the cubs again. She must really feel disturbed and I did not feel good.

There will be no pictures of these cubs from me.

Seronera Serenade

One of 4 Leopards (including 2 cubs) we saw on one afternoon game drive in the Seronera area, Serengeti, Tanzania.
The cat was sitting absolutely relaxed on a little mound beside the road. A few moments later the cat tried effortless to hunt a curious warthog.
Seronera is really a hot spot for Leopards. We saw at least 5 different Leopards in 4 days. We had even more sightings, but were not sure, if that´s a different cat or the same we already saw.

Just back from a fabulous big cat Safari to Ngorongoro, Ndutu and Serengeti in search of the great migration.

If anyone has ever been to the Serengeti, especially the busy Seronera area, he will know how lucky you are, when you have a sighting like this without any other vehicle around.
Now, what can I say, we´ve been that lucky.
While other visitors where watching a bushbuck staring in one direction (a sign that there is a predator around), our guide said, that he heard a strange call of a guinea fowl.
So he said, let´s go there, they usually only call that way, when there is danger around.
What can I say, we drove 1 km and there he came.
Just for us. Saimon, our guide, was yelling and screaming from one ear to the other.
What a sighting!
Just to tell: in the morning we saw a leopard moving in the gras while exactly 50 cars were watching the cat (believe me, I counted!).

Leopardess South Luangwa Valley, Zambia

Even though there are plenty of safari vehicle cruising in the Mfuwe part of the NP, you can still enjoy such a sighting without any of these cars. We found this cat as we left our camp earlier as usual looking for wild dogs we had found in the morning. On the way we found this beauty. No car around. We had this sighting for us for 15 minutes. Than the next car arrived and the felidae disappeared in the bushes, but we had a remarkable encounter.
