The red-blazed Thunder Swamp Trail descends to Spruce Run—a shallow, slow-moving, tannin-rich stream—before reaching a spur trail to the Pennel Run Natural Area. Along Spruce Run is a rich palustrine forest of hemlocks, white pines, and mixed hardwoods. Scattered stands of old-growth timber are found in the forest.

The natural area protects a 59-acre tract of old-growth hemlocks, white pines, and northern hardwoods in a deep ravine.

The photo shows young trees (mostly American beeches) growing amid much larger, older trees (mostly hemlocks and white pines). Old-growth forests are characterized by a mix of tree ages and sizes. When a large tree falls, the break in the canopy allows light to reach the formerly shaded forest floor. Tree seedlings, responding to the light, will readily grow.

The downed tree over the stream is a white pine. It probably toppled many years ago; most of the bark is gone, and moss covers the exposed surface heavily.

The meadow borders the Jakey Hollow Natural Area of Weiser State Forest. The Ward Crawford Trail, the only well-defined path traversing the natural area, ends abruptly at this view.
