While most people seem to be drawn to the things that are happening around them, I see things that aren't happening. Things that have happened. I am interested in the history of things. What happened? Why? What did it mean? How does it affect us? Education, devotion, vocation and avocation. These were all of the utmost importance to the people who lived them. Here are those former happenings. Here are the shadows of their glory.

Very underexposed. Even more than the last one, since that one was in shadow anyway. So apparently, the light meter is somehow subjective. Oh, and this has actually been lightened a bit.

The ending point of our photowalk. We started next door at Sugar Maple.

Intricate details under the eaves on the front of the house contrast with the solid-looking lines of the house in general.

The Bogk House was Frank Lloyd Wright's only residential commission in the city of Milwaukee.

The Great Double

This sculpture sits in the MGIC plaza, next to the building that gets wider as it goes up.
It was created by Argentinian artist Alicia Penalba, and installed in 1974. At 28 feet tall and twelve tons, the bronze is one of the largest pieces of art ever created by the lost-wax method.

We were told that it was intended to express "the duality of man and nature." While I like it, I think that explanation is complete bullshit.

Ward Memorial Hall was built on the grounds of Milwaukee's National Soldiers Home in 1881.

For eight decades, this playhouse was a popular stop for minstrel shows, vaudeville, variety acts and drama. Entertainers included Will Rogers, Bob Hope, George Jessel, Burns and Allen, Sophie Tucker, Ethel Merman, Nat King Cole, and Liberace.

One of the first theaters in Wisconsin, Ward Memorial Hall was originally a multi-purpose building with a flat-floored hall. It served as a theater and a place of worship and housed an amusement hall, restaurant, home store, and post office. A ticket window — the bow window on the rear porch — served rail passengers on a major line connecting Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Prarie du Chien.

During an 1898 renovation, the hall was rebuilt to its present configuration with balconies, a sloped floor, new seats, and an orchestra pit. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, additional enhancements were made to allow for the showing of motion pictures. Acoustical tiles with painted Wisconsin scenes were also added.

Most prominent, especially when lit at night, is the large stained-glass equestrian portrait of General Ulysses S. Grant on the east side of the Theatre, It was installed in 1887, a gift from the people of St. Louis and Grand Army of the Republic following the GAR’s 1887 national encampment.

I'm standing in the Moquith Mountain Wilderness Study Area, which is BLM land, but almost everything you can see is Utah state land. The parts of the WSA that are open sand dunes (as well as the roads) are open to off-road vehicles. The roads, being deep sand, are only passable by 4WD or ORV's anyway. This is all adjoining Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.
