General Haig inspecting troops, Messine, Belgium. The image is framed by two rows of soldiers down either side, angling away from the camera. Between them General Haig and his staff are approaching the photographer. The group is moving with a determined and purposeful air. There are buildings just visible in the background.

The propaganda value of this formal and ceremonial moment would have been immense. Inspiring pride and patriotism as well as intimating a bond between royalty and soldiers, this image would have made for classic propaganda.

General Haig and, to his left, the Commander-in-Chief of the Portuguese Expeditionary Force. It is very likely that the Commander-in-Chief in this case is General Tamagnini. Both men are holding canes and are smartly dressed in their uniforms. They appear to be waiting on a platform. A number of uniformed men can be seen milling around in the background.

During the war, visits to the Front by heads of state, members of royalty and dignitaries were frequent. It was an important way of maintaining good relations between those countries involved, and also of boosting morale amongst the troops.

Haig and Clemenceau, Cambrai, France, October 1918. This is a French press photograph of the French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau (1841-1929) standing between two other men on the steps of the town hall in Cambrai. Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) is standing to the left, slightly separate from the others.

This shows some of the considerable damage in Cambrai. The photograph was probably taken quite soon after Cambrai had been recaptured by the Allies on 9 October 1918.

Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) leaving a train to walk over a board path to his waiting car. Sir Philip Sassoon (1888-1939), Secretary to the British Prime Minister Lloyd George (1863-1945), is left of Haig and a French general, probably General Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) is in the background.
The photograph has no original caption. A similar photograph has been attributed to John Warwick Brooke. It is possible that this may be Foch's railway coach headquarters at Compiegne during the Armistice negotiations on 11 November 1918.
Haig and Churchill, possibly France, during or just after World War I

Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) and other military and civilian officials, including a French general, standing on a station platform. They appear about to greet someone as the two main civilians have their hats off. Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) stands to the right.

The photograph has no original caption. It is not dated but it is perhaps most likely that it was taken in the period between 1918 and 1921 when Churchill was Secretary of State for War.

Haig in Chantilly, France, December 1915. This photograph, which has a French press stamp, shows Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) walking down a road from his car past a line of French soldiers. At the beginning of the war, French infantry wore red trousers with a dark grey/blue overcoat with an upright collar. In the spring of 1915 these began to be replaced by less visible horizon-blue uniforms, the new greatcoats having lapels like those on the coats worn by these soldiers.

Haig was probably arriving at the Second Inter-Allied Conference which took place in Chantilly in December 1917. Its aim was to find ways in which the separate armies could co-ordinate better.

General Joffre pays a visit to Sir Douglas Haig. Haig and Joffre, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph shows Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) standing on the steps of a house and leaning forward to greet the French general, Mare?chal Joseph Joffre (1852-1931) who has just got out of a car. Joffre was the principal French commander on the Western Front until December 1916, after which his role became more ambassadorial.

This is a fairly standard posed photograph illustrative of the more formal contacts between the Allied commanders.
Lady Haig, another woman and a man, probably a disabled ex-serviceman, are in the background. It appears a relaxed occasion and it is clear that Haig regarded the Scout Movement as an important training for life.

Columns of American troops marching along a road, France, during World War I. A long column of American troops are marching, four abreast behind an officer, along a road. They are carrying full kit and wearing steel helmets. The road lies between low-lying fields which appear to be in grass. To the left of the road a group of British soldiers are standing and sitting on a bank of earth thrown up from the drainage ditch.

The American troops were often called the 'Doughboys'. The origin of this is traced to at least the American Civil War and possibly to the Mexican-American War of 1846-47. Some people think it may refer to the 'doughy' appearance of muddy troops, others suggest that the buttons of early uniforms were shaped like dough balls.

Tank Corp's mascot, 'Stunter', and his officer, France, during World War I. The officer and his bike look clean and well-kept and they appear to be in front of a grand house surrounded by gardens. The subjects do not look especially relaxed or natural and it is possible that this was an engineered shot, taken solely for propaganda purposes.

Mascots were kept by many groups of soldiers. Often they were strays which were picked up on the move and given a temporary home. They could be used to alleviated the boredom, tension and impersonality of the war.

National Library of Scotland posted a photo:

R.A.F. Squadron's fox mascot, France, during World War I. The fox is sitting in a plane's cockpit.

Regimental, barrack or group mascots were popular amongst soldiers during this period. They gave the group a focus, allowed the expression of human feeling and relieved the monotony of life on duty.

[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. This young fox has attached himself to the R.A.F. and is the mascot of a squadron. He is fond of flying.']
