Almost in counterbalance to the transitory nature of some of the industrial material he has used in the building of this church Pace has added some elements which expound a permanence to the building. Here the thickness of the entrance way into the Chapel gives a sense of weight and hierarchy

The industrial ethic is apparent with the use of steel girders to support the roof, and yet strangely enough, it contributes to the Gothic feel of the building.

Can't remember what this bits called between the library (right) and Town Hall extension (left) both by E Vincent Harris. Seem to be fixated with this area recently

Manchester's Town Hall extension (at the back - 1934-8) and Public Library (foreground 1930-4) both by E Vincent Harris. The Town Hall extension is a superb structure often overshadowed by Waterhouses Victorian building. It was designed to harmonise the Gothic of the Town Hall with the Classicism of the Library. It works well.

Here George Pace uses a strikingly modern simplified form for the plinth holding the Vigil Light. It's sharp edges contribute to the wonderful layered shadow effects caused by the dormer light. The 'coldness' of the form is softened by the tooling to the stone which adds wonderful texture and and anchors the stark modernity of the chapel into historic tradition
