The Six-spotted Tiger Beetle is widespread throughout the eastern US but is rare along the Gulf Coast. This particular specimen was found in a steephead ravine in Gadsden Co, FL. This photograph is a 12-frame focus stack.

The large "white" worm lizard is rarely found above ground. They like to hang out in the nests of leaf cutter ants where they feed on ants, ant pupae, and other insects. Arima Valley, Trinidad.

A large anole that frequents tree trunks throughout rural Toabgo. It's status as a native Tobagonian is questionable.

This attractive little snake is moderately common around streams in Trinidad's Northern Range. There seem to be two color phases: green (like this one) and brown. Arima Valley, Trinidad.

A colorful example of the Cat-eyed Snake, a common species on Trinidad. I've found cat-eyed snakes in almost every habitat on the island: montane rainforests, human dwellings, lowland swamp, and agricultural fields. This one is from the Taylor River in the Guanapo Valley.

Neonate Fer-de-lances use their bright yellow tail tips as a lure to draw in potential prey. Twitching it like a worm or caterpillar, small lizards or frogs are enticed to approach within striking distance of the otherwise cryptic snake. Guanapo Valley, Trinidad.

From back in the point-and-shoot days, when I was using a Sony Mavica that recorded on miniature CDs! This snake was captured on a herp trip with Dr. Mike Dorcas to Tortuguero, Costa Rica. Yes, I broke it's fragile tail while catching it and tried to mask it with the leaf. I nearly forgot I had photos of this species, but found them while cataloging more recent photos of U. fulviceps.

This fragile-tailed litter snake was captured on a herp trip with Dr. Mike Dorcas to Tortuguero, Costa Rica. I nearly forgot I had photos of this species, but found them while cataloging more recent photos of U. fulviceps. The two species are very similar but can be distinguished by the longer red head cap of fulviceps.
