Palomar Large Format Camera lifted for the first time

The Large Format Camera, a 6-CCD, 48-megapixel mosaic imaging camera for the 200-inch Hale Telescope, was delivered to Palomar Observatory on 16 October 1999 to see first light. Its last hours at Caltech were interrupted by the Hector Mine earthquake (magnitude 7.1), which I also felt strongly at the telescope. The camera escaped the earthquake unscathed, though it incurred some injuries when the transport van climbed a curb on the way to Palomar the next morning.

The camera was to be lifted by crane to the telescope's prime focus, at the top of the telescope. In a minor oversight, the camera was constructed without lifting hooks, necessitating improvisation of a sling.

Mounting Filters

During the LFC's first light run, one of my jobs was to mount the very expensive, custom-made optical interference filters into these machined aluminum carriers.

The method was to place the filter into the carrier, and secure it with nylon screws and washers. When the correct torque was reached, the screwdriver would slip out of the screw head, scratching a surface that you prayed wasn't the filter.
