The pumpkin has become a pie. Crust from scratch. Filling from scratch (small sugar pumpkin, roasted in foil for 90 minutes at 325 degrees).

Strobist: Lit with Speedlite into umbrella camera right, plus on-axis fill 3 stops down.

In hindsight, I should have paid more attention to the reflection in the glass platter so that it would have extended throughout the frame. Next time?

Eclipse

The 2012 solar annular eclipse, as seen from near Kayenta, Arizona. The ring in the sky is the Sun.

This is a single exposure.

Even at maximum eclipse, the Sun was far too bright to view unprotected. It was, in fact, too bright to shoot with an unfiltered camera. I tried shooting it at ISO 100, f/45, 1/8000s, but it was still so blown out that the eclipse wasn't visible. Thus, the use of a filter.

In essence, this is a 12-stop grad-ND filter, better known as a piece of welder's glass held over half of the lens aperture.

This is a situation where some extra-fast glass would have been nice, like maybe a 50/1.2. I like the exposure (about 3 stops down) for the atmosphere it gives, but the noise at ISO12800 is pretty severe. Such is the nature of shooting 40 minutes before sunrise (even before civil twilight) in a dark wilderness area.

This is Charlie, a dog on the farm where I was taking my earlier horse photos. He was really friendly, and he seemed to get a lot of enjoyment out of chasing the reflection of the sun from my watch.

(Not to be confused with Charlie, my family's dog.)
