Martha hear the Redcoat shout insults to her as he rode by her on the way to the river, at that moment his horse lost its footing, and threw the rider onto the rocks you see here, below the house. That white pipe on top of the hill comes from the root cellar where the Plantation house of William, and Martha Bell once stood. the rocks below, where the mounted redcoad died.

Just before the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, Lord Cornwallis, set his wagons, and baggage ahead to Bell's Mill. He had planned to go there to confiscate corn, and meal, for his army. He also knew that Capt. Bell, was an Officer in the North Carolina Militia.

What did not realize was that he was about to meet a woman that was his equal in saavy, and brave.

After the carnage at Guilford Courthouse, the badly hurt British Army needed a place to rest, and recoup, before moving on to Wilmington.

For three nights, and two days, Martha Bell, entertained Lord Cornwallis. She did so after striking a bargain with Cornwallis. "He would make her home is headquarters, and use her mill for provisions. He in turn would promise to protect, and leave her farm, and mill undamaged.

When he had this conversation, Martha Bell made Cornwallis give his word, else, she was going to burn the mill first, so that he could not benefit from it.
