Seattle’s "Fog Affair” continued well into the first weekend of February with this early morning scene of the skyline seen from Harbor Avenue in West Seattle.

This view also features the city’s newest landmark, our Ferris Wheel (officially known as “The Seattle Great Wheel”) along the lefthand side of the frame. It’s open until 10pm every night except Friday and Saturday, when it closes at midnight!

Please enjoy this image of the Seattle waterfront at night. Although taken three years ago, this lively and dazzling scene remains relatively unchanged today! I’ve actually been wanting to post this one since 2009, but never quite got around to it until today! This is why I love my archives!

As many of you know, I am in love with cities from all over the world. When I eventually settle down and buy my own place, different walls of entire rooms, from ceiling to floor, will be images of different cityscapes, just like this. . .windows of my world.

Seattle, with a population of 609,000, is the 23rd largest city in the United States. The 24th largest city is the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. (or what Seattleites call “the other Washington”).

Some trivia:

Washington State is the only state named after a U.S. president, and the only state in the western US with an English name. All the surrounding states and their neighbors have names derived from either Spanish or Native American origin.

There is only one “Seattle” on the planet. No other city or town in the world shares its name.
“As Long As You’re Alright"

TIA International Photography posted a photo:

This was the skyline of Seattle on the evening of Easter Sunday. Qwest Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks football team, is illuminated in green lights to the right.

I had not initially planned to go out, but one of my closest friends (who lives in Toronto) encouraged me, via a conversation on Facebook, to get off my derriere and take advantage of the beautiful sunset I had mentioned to him. It was good advice. A few minutes after I reached this location (the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct that will eventually be torn down and replaced by a tunnel) and set up my tripod and camera, a police officer approached me in his squad car -- red, white, and blue lights blazing. I sighed deeply and thought irritably, “There goes my opportunity.” I turned around, expecting a nasty attitude and rude tone from the officer, and asked calmly, “Do you need me to vacate?”

Truth be told, where I was situated is only permissible for emergency situations, and this was no emergency. In addition, the viaduct is so doddery, one can feel the structure vibrating when large trucks and buses pass, so it’s not advisable to stay there long, similar to any shoulder of a major highway. To my surprise, the officer’s response was friendly and conciliatory. He said, “Oh no, I just wanted to make sure you were alright.”

I told him I was a photographer and just wanted to get some images before it was completely dark. He, too, looked at the skyline, nodded, and said he understood. “As long as you’re alright, then no problem,” he said, and proceeded to switch off those invasive siren lights as he drove down the highway. It then occurred to me, as I tried to put myself in the shoes of the officer and throw out stereotypical scenarios, that perhaps he found it unusual for someone to be parked on the viaduct and was, in fact, concerned for my safety.

I have been stopped by the police before while taking photographs, but this was probably one of the most pleasant exchanges I’ve ever had with them. In Philadelphia, some security guards actually escorted me out because they were annoyed that I had walked to the top level of a parking garage instead of driving my car to the place and paying for a space! (That was kind of funny in retrospect. Still got my super-duper photos).

I wish all of you a pleasant weekend as the first third of 2011 comes to an end!

My thoughts and prayers to the people of Japan, Libya, the southeastern U.S., and congratulations to
“As Long As You’re Alright"

My thoughts and prayers to the people of Japan, Libya, the southeastern U.S., and congratulations to
Prince William and soon-to-be Princess Kate in the UK.
The City, the Memory, and the Thumb

TIA International Photography posted a photo:

This is an aerial view of Seattle that was taken in May 2010. I remember this image quite well because my memory card was actually *full* a few seconds beforehand. This was my “lucky shot” of the day (perhaps the month!) because I was not expecting the pilot of the seaplane to take this path before landing. I had to quickly decide which images to delete from my memory card. I was incredibly excited to get this very atypical vantage of downtown from the north with Route 99 (the Alaskan Way Viaduct) featured as the main thoroughfare instead of Interstate 5, which is much more prominent in images of Seattle.

Simultaneously, I tried to delete some photos as I peered out the window. There was some ironic humor in the madness of my multi-tasking because I felt my camera was deleting images *way too slowly* right at this particular moment (which would be gone for good within seconds). I kept thinking, “Thumbs, do not fail me right now!” I’m sure my camera was no slower than at any other time, but I did manage to delete two images and capture this view before the seaplane landed a minute later. The view is blurry in the foreground, but in retrospect, it was well worth the hustle!

Have a great weekend, friends!
Glory Days of the Alaskan Way

TIA International Photography posted a photo:

The Alaskan Way Viaduct, completed on April 4, 1953, is an elevated section of State Route 99 that runs along the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle's Industrial District and downtown Seattle. It is the smaller of the two major north-south traffic corridors through Seattle (the other being Interstate 5), carrying up to 110,000 vehicles per day. The viaduct runs above the surface street, Alaskan Way, from S. Nevada Street in the south to the entrance of Belltown's Battery Street Tunnel in the north, following previously existing railroad lines.

The 2001 Nisqually earthquake damaged the viaduct and its supporting Alaskan Way Seawall and required the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to invest US$14.5 million in emergency repairs. Experts give a 1-in-20 chance that the viaduct could be shut down by an earthquake within the next decade. Since the Nisqually Earthquake occurred, semi-annual inspections have discovered continuing settlement damage.

Due to damage from continuing settlement, a group of researchers and faculty from the University of Washington urged the mayor of Seattle (in 2007) to close the viaduct within a four-year timeframe.

On January 12, 2009, the state of Washington, King County, the city of Seattle, and the Port of Seattle revealed that they had agreed to replace the viaduct with a four-lane, 2-mile (3.2 km) long underground tunnel. The tunnel would have a south portal in SoDo, near Qwest Field, and a north portal near Thomas Street, north of the Battery Street Tunnel.

The project is estimated to cost US$4.25 billion, with the state, city, and county promising funding well short of the estimate.
Glory Days of the Alaskan Way
