Royal Court Theatre Liverpool. Phase 1 (of 4) of a major refurbishment was carried out in 2012 and involved the complete restoration, redecoration and reseating of the auditorium. The theatre seats around 1,200 on three levels and is grade 2 listed.

Royal Court Theatre Liverpool. The very rear of the balcony is the least good place to sit, merely by dint that it is the furthest point from the stage. Nevertheless the view is good, the brand new seats are comfortable, and there are many theatres with far worse balconies.

Royal Court Theatre Liverpool. The Royal Court is unusual in the UK in that it serves dinner in the stalls before the show, and the seating is therefore a mix of tables and chairs and bench seating. The two balconies contain conventional tip-up theatre seats giving patrons a wide choice of options. Sightlines are good throughout with no pillars.

Palace / Showbar Warrington. Inside the former theatre, there are now two separate spaces, this is the first floor area which clearly was once the dress circle. Pillars support the balcony and the line of the balcony front can be seen top left (for some reason the plasterwork on the balconies was stripped in the 1960's). There is a dance floor to the left of the barrier on a false floor inserted above what would have been the front stalls of the theatre. Both spaces are well appointed and comfortable. As the Palace Theatre it originally claimed a 2,100 seating capacity - though for many this would not have been in nearly the same levels of comfort as today!

Hippodrome St Helens. In 1956 the cinema proscenium was altered to accommodate Cinemascope. More recently the rear wall of the stage was extended to allow a balcony to be inserted on the stage, increasing capacity and allowing for bingo-in-the-round!

Hippodrome St Helens. Initially there was an ornate theatre auditorium with two balconies and a range of five boxes on either side of the stage, but this was removed in the late 1930's for a streamlined modern cinema auditorium - although the stage was retained. The Hippodrome was a theatre for around 35 years, followed by approx. 30 years use as a cinema, and bingo use accounts for 45 years to date in it's 110 year history. It is a notably friendly club.

York Theatre Royal. The theatre currently seats around 850 in four levels. The stalls have been reduced in size to remove the final back rows of the original pit.

York Theatre Royal. Opened in 1765 and rebuilt on several occasions, the auditorium was created by Frank Tugwell in 1902. It is grade 2* listed.

Winter Gardens Morecambe Lancashire. The vast auditorium once seated around 3,000. Sadly there is little call for entertainment on that scale in the town today.

Winter Gardens Morecambe Lancashire. A vast beautiful theatre with an amazing segmental vaulted ceiling. An active Friends group are painstakingly restoring the venue, and crucially taking care of security, but were set back in 2012 when a Heritage Lottery application was turned down.

Winter Gardens Morecambe Lancashire. The theatre was designed by Mangnall & Littlewood in 1897, it was altered in 1910-11, possibly by Frank Matcham, and again in the mid 1930's. The exterior of the building was restored in 1997 and serious faults (rot) halted inside, but a new viable use has still to be found to ensure it's future.

Leeds Grand Assembly Rooms / Plaza 2003. After the cinema closed in 1985 the auditorium was used for rehearsals until the 1923 auditorium was stripped out and the space restored to nearer the original 1878 design.

Leeds Grand Theatre 2003 before the renovations. Designed by George Corson, opened in 1878 and now grade 2* listed. It was apparently the only theatre building designed by the architect, and is unlike any other in the UK, conceived on a massive and very ornate scale. It cost £62,000 to build, in today's terms this equates to £6,250,000! Home of Opera North.

Bath Theatre Royal, the theatre seats just under 1,000. Although retaining the original C J Phipps basic design the theatre has been refurbished and restored on many occasions, the most recent being 1982 (Carl Toms), 1999 (shortly before these images were taken, and 2010 (when the auditorium was redecorated and new bars and access facilities were installed).

Bath Theatre Royal. Following a fire in 1862 most of the 1805 theatre (designed by George Dance the Younger) was destroyed. Plans were immediately put in place to replace the theatre and C J Phipps was selected as architect. Using the foundations and the façade of the old theatre the new Theatre Royal was opened in 1863.

Leeds Grand Assembly Rooms / Plaza 2003. Now the Howard Assembly Room, this for many years operated as a cinema with a new auditorium inserted within the original Victorian room. This photo shows the original barrel-vaulted ceiling (now uncovered and restored) in the balcony together with the lower cinema ceiling above the stalls.
