Tiffany lamp - 5

A close-up of the intricate design of a Tiffany lamp.

Contrary to what many people believe, a Tiffany lamp is nothing to do with the jewellery company of the same name – nor indeed, the perpetually elegant Ms Holly Golightly. Instead, it’s meticulously designed and handmade by the company founded by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1943), an American artist and designer noted for his work in Art Nouveau stained glass. He created his first lamp in 1895 or thereabouts – and the rest, as they say, is history.

I photographed this short set of images, with the manager’s permission, at the Tiffany shop in the Starhill Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – quite the most upmarket shopping mall I’ve ever visited.

Wing Commander Robert Stanford-Tuck DSO, DFC, DFC (US), AFC, RAF

Peter Denton posted a photo:

Having just posted (no pun intended) a few German stamps from the Nazi era, perhaps it’s fitting that I should follow them with this – a memorial to Wing Commander Robert Stanford-Tuck, one of the RAF’s Second World War flying legends.

During the course of the war, he was accredited with no fewer than 27 enemy aerial kills, two shared destroyed, six probables and one shared damaged. He served in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain with ‘conspicuous gallantry and initiative’ and over time was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Bars, the Air Force Cross and the US Distinguished Flying Cross.

After the war, Bob Stanford-Tuck worked as an RAF test pilot before retiring to grow mushrooms in Kent. This memorial is in St Clement's, the parish church of Sandwich, near to where he lived. He died, aged 70, in 1987.

The three RAF crests on the memorial are (left to right) the East India Squadron, Fighter Command, and the Burma Squadron.

Sandwich Salutation!

Peter Denton posted a photo:

I spotted the tulip featured in my earlier image when I visited the gardens of The Salutation, a Grade 1 listed manor house in the historic town of Sandwich, Kent. This lovely Queen Anne-style house was built by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the great architect of the Edwardian era, in 1911-12. His friend and collaborator Gertrude Jekyll, the renowned horticulturalist, planted the gardens - now known as the Secret Gardens of Sandwich.

The house, set next to the River Stour, takes its name from an inn that once stood nearby. Today, it’s an upmarket bed and breakfast place, but the gardens are open to the public.

Incidentally, talking of Sandwich... if you've not seen it before, this (below) might amuse...

After one of the longest and most tedious winters in recent years, some people are saying that here in the UK we've missed out on spring.

Well, out in the Ham Lands near the Thames at Petersham the other day, I caught a welcome glimpse of spring - and here it is.

Tiffany lamp - 2

Peter Denton posted a photo:

More tomorrow.
