Replica of the sanctuary knocker on the main door of Durham Cathedral (the 12th century original is in the Treasures of St. Cuthbert exhibition).

Until 1623 people accused of certain crimes could seek sanctuary by grasping the ring. They would then be offered sanctuary for 37 days, after which they would either have to leave the country or face trial. The 37 days could be used to bring their affairs in order.

A Shag's egg on Staple Island, one of the Farne Islands of the Northumberland coast, UK. Some of the Shags there built elaborate nests of twigs and such, but some, like this one, decided that the grass was good enough.

Entrance to the chapterhouse of Durham Cathedral, seen from the cloister. Wish we could have seen the interior, but it was closed to visitors.

Most of the cloister is 14th/15th century and restoration work from the 19th century, but there are still quite a few romanesque doors from Norman times as well. This is one of them.

The cloister of Durham Cathedral was laid out when the cathedral was begun, but most of it dates from the 15th century (the ceiling) and the restoration of 1828.

The Galilee Chapel, part of Durham Cathedral, was built in 1175 and is late Norman in style. Medieval stained glass has been 'recycled' in most of the windows. There are traces of wall paintings from the 12th-16th century. The ones of the arches date from the 13th or 14th centuries. If you view the photo in its large or original size, you can see the crucifixion scene a little right of center.

The tomb of the Venerable Bede (ca. 673-735) stands in this chapel. On the other side of the cathedral, behind the High Altar, is the shrine of St. Cuthbert (ca. 634-687).

These paintings behind the altar (the figure is probably St. Cuthbert) date from around the time of the chapel's construction in the 12th century.
