Ernie Harwell Park ( site of former Tiger Stadium )

Bennett Park was a wooden park first built on this site in 1895, hosting the home games of the Detroit Tigers. It was replaced by a steel-and-concrete stadium named Navin Field in 1912. It opened the same week as Fenway Park in Boston. It was renamed Briggs Stadium in 1938 and the Detroit Lions began playing their home games there as well. It was renamed Tiger stadium in 1961, the Lions left here in 1974, and the Detroit Tigers moved out at the end of 1999, leaving the building abandoned. Demolition on the empty stadium commenced on June 30, 2008 and was completed over a year later, September 21, 2009. No plans for this very historic site have been agreed upon, and there is no sign documenting how historic this site actually is. Occasionally a pickup baseball game ( such as the one I captured in the background ) happens on the original basepaths but outside of that it remains unused.

Old Main

Located on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit, this Classic Revival style beauty was built in 1895 and was originally Detroit's Central High School. In 1926 it was given over completely to the University ( originally known as the College of the City of Detroit, later to become Wayne University and eventually Wayne State University ). The clock in the tower is not original - it was replaced in 1934.

Cha-cha-cha-changes.....

Looks like someone is fixing up the old abandoned Casa de Espana on Michigan Ave , as the doors are now BRIGHT red. Originally built in 1895.

The Corner

Probably the most famous intersection in the state, the corner of Michigan and Trumbull. Organized baseball has been played here since 1895 ( although there are reports of teams playing here during the 1870's ) , Tiger Stadium started it's life as a wood stadium in 1895, replaced by the steel structure you see here in 1912. Abandoned since 2000, this building is now sadly 3/4 demolished.

Casa De Espana - close up

Located near Dearborn on Michigan Avenue ( Just East of Livernois ) , it used to be an old firehouse. The plaque in the middle of the building states it was built in 1895. Thanks to the folks at detroityes.com ( especially Hornwrecker for nailing down the dates ) - This was in use by the Detroit Fire Department from 1896-1983. After that it became a fairly popular Flamenco style restaurant until the owner was tragically killed in a car crash. A close up of my most popular picture here on flickr.

Tiger Stadium in Detroit

Closed in 1999 and scheduled for demolition. There has been a stadium at this location in Detroit since 1895, and this Steel enforced structure ( previously it had been made of wood ) opened the same week as Fenway Park in Boston. The Tiger Stadium sign was removed from this building at the end of November 2007.

Casa De Espana - Dearborn ( Update )

My wife and I get questions a lot about updates on buildings, how do they look now, etc. I came across this one again today and, as it's our most popular picture I figured I'd post an update. It appears that there is no longer a realtor listing on the front, and the grass and trees have grown quite a bit. There's a lot of damage to the sides of this building. I prefer to focus on the front and still find this building very compelling.
