View on black please! And large. For the detail.

I've shown you Tower Bridge when the sky is pink and also when the sky was blue. Now, here it is when it's both! I've also shown you Tower Bridge at night, but I couldn't squeeze everything into this photo.

This was part of that fantastic sunset where I got to see so many wonderful colours in the sky. Although similar to the previous images, I like the feel of this one; dual main colours and a lot of breathing room for the landmark.

Please view this one large so you can see the details on the bridge and in the clouds. Thank you for all the recent comments and favourites! I read every single comment that's left and check out the photostreams of every single person who adds me as a contact. I might not add you back, as that would be unwieldy and impractical for me, but I certainly have a look at your photos!

I know it's the 17th of January, but happy new year everyone! This is my first proper post of 2012, as I've been so busy with work and training. I haven't had the chance to really get out with the camera, although I have been planning some trips for later this year. Myself and Greg A are off to China in the spring, so if anyone has any good advice, we'd appreciate it!

Although this cityscape isn't as pretty as some others, I thought I'd take the chance to show the often overlooked south London. As cityscapes go, it's pretty lacking in excitement, especially when compared to the glamour of the north London skyline, but it's still worth seeing. The main building is The Razor, a residential block that resuses rainwater and whose roof contains three wind turbines to generate some of the building's power.

I really like the futuristic feel that this photo has. There's something about the way the metallic skyscraper stands out amongst the smaller surrounding houses.

I'll hopefully get posting some more landscapes soon, assuming I get more time and can find some in the archives. For those of you that missed it, I produced a video showing my photography from last year (which is also my first year of photography). You can see it at:

Luminous London

Some cities like Bergen (Norway), Paris (France) and even Marrakech (Morocco) make it very easy to get lovely cityscapes. London (England) not so much. Every high vantage point is either an incredibly expensive, booked-out tourist trap or an incredibly expensive, booked-out restaurant.

I really wish London was more photographic friendly. Other places are proud of their cityscape and I feel that London should follow suit. In the meantime, you just have to be more resourceful. This photo is best viewed large (press L) to appreciate all the detail. Go on, give it a go.

I am at a conference today, so I shall not be on Flickr.

View on large please!

It's amazing how much the light can change during a sunset, especially a dramatic one. During this fantastic one, I was around City Hall viewing a photography exhibition, when this amazing sunset almost came out of nowhere. I stayed around for hours, getting various scenes through all the phases of light and colour. It started off quite pink, then the blue hour was truly blue, especially where Tower Bridge was concerned. As the light started to die, the sky took on a magical lavender quality to it.

It was one of the best sunsets I have ever seen and an added bonus that I had my camera and tripod. To all the photographers out there, let this be a lesson to you; always stick around shooting, as the light can differ quite suddenly and completely change the whole scene. I saw a recent sunset in Paris that almost rivalled this, so I might post one of those shots up later this week.

This photo has been one of my desktop wallpapers for quite a while now, but I feel it's time to share it with the world. London is a fantastic city, especially at night. You've really got to get up high to appreciate it sometimes (I have Murphyz to thank for that). This is a fantastic view of London; you've got Waterloo and the Shell Centre straight ahead with the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament on either side. If you look carefully, you can also make out Battersea Power Station and Buckingham Palace in the distance.

This is definitely best viewed large (press L), but, and I don't usually do this, even larger (huge file).

I'm off to a wedding tomorrow, so I won't be online much. As usual, I'll try and catch up when I'm back.

Midnight Hamlet at The Globe

I was invited along to see a midnight showing of Hamlet at The Globe theatre in London and, having never been to this place, couldn't turn it down! Although perhaps not as nice as St Stephen's Basilica or Leadenhall Market, the 'inside' of The Globe is pretty ornate. I say inside like that, as it's mostly open air and you can see the night sky while watching William Shakespeare.

This was one of my first outings with my new 5D MKII and I'm very impressed at how it handles high ISOs. This has had some slight noise reduction on it, but it was shot at 6400 and was still very usable. They didn't like you taking photos at any point, so I had to do this one really quickly on the way back from the intermission.

One more photo this week, then I'm off for a long weekend.

This was taken in the same shoot as my previous photos of The Shard and London Bridge. It was magnificent lighting conditions that night. Even though London Bridge and the surround area looks great in black and white, I still prefer getting down there during Twilight.

I love all the views from this side, whether it's the dominating Shard, the brightly lit Pickford's Wharf or Southwark Cathedral quietly poking it's head up.

I've taken a few photos of the Millennium Bridge, but that won't stop me posting another one. This one actually started as a silhouette against the sunset, but the sunset was so strong that the colours looked very unnatural, so I decided to monochrome it and I was happy enough with the results. Sometimes people look good against bright colours and sometimes a more minimalist approach is required.

I can't remember where I was heading to when I took this, but when I turned around, I liked how the Millennium Bridge looked against the sky, so I waited for a single person to be in the frame; which took quite some time! The plane in the sky directly above her was a total accident.

I thought this would look good on a white background, but I now think it looks better on black. (Press L)

I've had quite a few dark photos recently, so I thought I'd brighten things up a little.

Walking along the Thames at night is great for photo opportunities (My last two shots have been Thames-side). Part of tonight's walk took me by London Bridge and The Shard. (Although you can see The Shard from many places in London!)

I was actually on my way to get photos near St. Katharine Docks, but as I passed under London Bridge during the blue hour, I loved how all the buildings were lit up, the bridge itself was neon red, there was a lamp nearby that had just come on and the moon was directly above, illuminating everything!

I used a circular polarising filter to get some rich colours and make the clouds pop and I may or may not have used my ND4 filter for this exposure.

Walking across Tower Bridge (just before I took this shot of The Shard) I looked across towards HMS Belfast and was struck by just how colourful that area was! I framed the shot using the parts of the bridge supports and when it came to processing the shot, I decided the only way to show just how amazed I was at the colour was to desaturate the rest of the photograph. I don't often to selective colouring, but I thought this was a prime example for it.

New Lease of Life

My 'new lease of life' concept means that every Friday, I'm going to repost an old photograph to the top of my photostream. If you've seen it before and didn't like it, sorry about this. If you've seen it before and did like it, then you may feast your eyes again. If you haven't seen it, then here is your chance to see select older works from me.

This shot was taken and processed about two weeks after I took up photography, but looking back, I still quite like it! The HDR is perhaps on the strong side, but that adds to the look. Maybe one day I'll reprocess this shot and see what I can do these days.

Since then, this image has been picked up by Getty, so if you want a copy, you'll have to buy it off them.

I wanted to get a slightly less done version of the Millennium Bridge, so I was going to do an underneath shot. After going out to the side, I quite likedt he way the suspension arms almost matched the shape of St Paul's Cathedral. I attached my Gorillapod to the railing by The Thames (keeping the strap around my neck!) Just as I had set up, a plane flew into shot and started turning. I like the fact that this trail of light seems to be circling around the cathedral and even though I'm an atheist, I'm willing to believe in angels for the sake of artistic licence...

After walking full circle around The Shard one evening, we decided to head back into town across Tower Bridge. After stopping to get some obligatory shots of that, we started heading past the Tower of London. I stopped to look back at The Shard and quite liked the way there was a gap in the trees and this seemed to sprout up into the sky from it. Judging by the light trails, some high vehicle drove through the shot, but I quite like the effect against the sky. I thought I'd post it as a black and white, just to make a change. I hope the monochrome suits it.

As usual, looks better larger on black (Press L).
