I've shown you Tower Bridge when the sky is pink and also when the sky was blue. Now, here it is when it's both! I've also shown you Tower Bridge at night, but I couldn't squeeze everything into this photo.

This was part of that fantastic sunset where I got to see so many wonderful colours in the sky. Although similar to the previous images, I like the feel of this one; dual main colours and a lot of breathing room for the landmark.

Please view this one large so you can see the details on the bridge and in the clouds. Thank you for all the recent comments and favourites! I read every single comment that's left and check out the photostreams of every single person who adds me as a contact. I might not add you back, as that would be unwieldy and impractical for me, but I certainly have a look at your photos!

The Still Lake

I know you're all probably sick of photos of Lake Bled, but I'm not, so you'll have to do with a few more! I had wandered down for sunrise and, as I hope you're aware, you need to be in location and set up well before the time of day you want to capture. This is easy for sunsets, but much more difficult for dawn. Not only do you have to arise at silly o'clock, but you have to move around in darkness. This isn't so much of a problem in a city, but in the countryside by a lake, the visibility is much less. Luckily I had my head torch.

The lights weren't particularly illuminating and I could just about make out shapes on the lake from my viewpoint. I cracked up the exposures to around five and a half minutes and shot away. Although this is an HDR shot, it's mostly one exposure blended in, with the HDR compensating for the dark areas around the mountains and the bright areas around Bled Castle. With this long exposure you can also see quite clearly the first hints of the sun coming up to the right of the church tower.

I love travelling. It's one of the greatest joys you can have, yet so many people don't travel enough. On this trip, I had started in Zagreb, Croatia and taken the train across the border to Ljubljana in Slovenia. From here, it was an hour and a half bus ride to the magical Lake Bled (Blejsko jezero).

As I've said before, the lake was nice during they day, but fantastic at night and then at sunrise it was one of the most fantastic scenes I've ever witnessed. Sadly my photographs can't do it justice, although I've tried my best.

The lake (Slovenia's only natural lake) is completely surrounded by the snow-capped Julian Alps and itself surrounds an island containing a church, the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary (Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja). This church was built in the 15th century and weddings are often held here. To get to the church from the lake, you need to climb up 99 steps. Poor husbands have to carry their wives up these steps and then ring the wishing bell, found up the 52-metre tower.

This scene is well deserving of being viewed in the lightbox (Press L), so see it how it was intended. Speaking of which, the jpg compression for the web caused a lot of banding in the sky, so I added a little noise to the RGB channels to compensate. The image looks much better at full uncompressed 5k size.

I spend a good three hours taking photos here, from complete darkness to after sun-up, so expect plenty more photos from here in the future. If you want to see how I did this, plus some more photos, you can check out the behind the scenes video:

Although not as good as my other photos of Tower Bridge, I still thought I'd put this one up, as it not only shows different ambient light, but also from a different angle than my previous shots. This was taken after the greatest sunset in the world had finished. It also feels good to get back to posting famous landmarks lit up at night! A point to all the non-UK people, this is a bridge in London, but it is not London Bridge, it is Tower Bridge; so many people get them mixed up!

I'm off to Finland and Estonia with VJ and Greg later today, so please excuse my absence. I'd also like to thank the people who gave me all the fantastic Helsinki advice in my previous photo. I'll get around to thanking you in person once I return! I've been very busy in work recently, so apologies if I haven't been as active on your photostreams as much as you'd like. I'll try and have a look when I eventually get the time. (You may have noticed I've also been posted photos my less frequently.)

As a night shot, this looks far more splendiferous when viewed large and on a dark background, so give that a go please. Available to buy on RedBubble as a print, poster or postcard if you so wish.

Starry Starry Night

This definitely needs to be seen in the lightbox!

Although I love night photography, I've never really captured the stars before. I've had the odd shot that has a few, but never really any proper starscapes. The only other time I tried was in the Sahara desert and it was too cloudy at night to get anything!

After a long, long day hiking around Lake Bled in Slovenia, I was walking back in the dark, when I noticed how amazingly clear the sky was. Being so far in the Slovenian countryside (about 60 km north west of Ljubljana) and surrounded by the Julian Alps means that there is very little light pollution around.

While sitting around waiting on a shot to finish, a nice Israeli family came up to talk to me about my travels and photography. We chatted for quite a while and they offered to put me up if I ever visited Haifa. How kind! They even offered me a lift back to my hotel, seeing it was so cold, but I declined as I knew I'd want to take even more photos as I walked back around the lake. I finally got indoors around midnight and then had to get up at around 06:00 for sunrise.

I chose this title as I know my Dad likes the Don McLean song about Vincent Van Gogh.

Most people are well aware that I say this about most photographs, but this one does need to be viewed large and on black, as it completely changes the photo!

View on large please!

It's amazing how much the light can change during a sunset, especially a dramatic one. During this fantastic one, I was around City Hall viewing a photography exhibition, when this amazing sunset almost came out of nowhere. I stayed around for hours, getting various scenes through all the phases of light and colour. It started off quite pink, then the blue hour was truly blue, especially where Tower Bridge was concerned. As the light started to die, the sky took on a magical lavender quality to it.

It was one of the best sunsets I have ever seen and an added bonus that I had my camera and tripod. To all the photographers out there, let this be a lesson to you; always stick around shooting, as the light can differ quite suddenly and completely change the whole scene. I saw a recent sunset in Paris that almost rivalled this, so I might post one of those shots up later this week.

This photo has been one of my desktop wallpapers for quite a while now, but I feel it's time to share it with the world. Pyramide du Louvre

I'm now back from my first time in Paris. I have to say, what an amazingly beautiful city! The architecture is simply superb; second to none. I will have to go back some time. Sadly Paris is also quite smelly and very expensive, but these are minor points when compared to how photogenic the place is.

The large glass (and metal) pyramid is the main entrance to the Louvre Museum (Musée du Louvre). It was designed by I.M. Pei and completed in 1989. It was built as the museum could not handle the number of visitors with the existing entrances. You enter though this glass pyramid, descend into the depths of the complex and then ascend into each of the buildings surrounding the courtyard. The structure stands at over 20 metres tall and the sides are 35 metres long. It is comprised of approximately 673 glass segments.

It was the end of my second night and we decided to head back to the courtyard by the Musée du Louvre to get some night shots (I love museums). I was absolutely stunned by how fantastic the pyramid looked. It was impressive enough during the day, but at night time the view much more magnificent. As soon as I saw the reflections on the water, I knew I had to capture them. It's possible to get good, clear reflections on fast running water, such as a river, but almost static water like this was perfect.

I took a series of shots, all from different angles. I liked this head on shot, as the diagonals draw you into the image. I was tempted to post one slightly further back, so show the corner, but the reflection would lose some impact and I feel this almost gives you a sense of standing there yourself. I hope.

For those of you who like technical details, this was a seven shot HDR with the quickest shutter speed being 2 seconds and the longest being 2 minutes. This was about 5 minutes in total. Quite a long time to be taking a single image and quite draining on the camera battery. Luckily I brought three on my trip.

Detailed night shots are always best when viewed large on black. (Press L). Expect plenty more shots from Paris in the coming weeks. I shall try and catch up with all your photos as best I can.

I often dedicate my photos to various people and this time it's my parents, who absolutely love France and haven't been to Paris in a very long time.

Tower Bridge Blue Hour

As photographers, we all know that one of the best times to shoot is around sunset or just after during the blue hour. The light is so much better during these couple of hours, much like sunrise.

I was lucky to be around Tower Bridge on Saturday when we had the most amazing sunset. It was been a really cloudy day, but the sun came out strong just as it was setting. I was running around like a madman with my tripod, trying to get shots from all different angles and locations as the light was changing.

I'm not too sure why it was so prominent tonight, but the colours changed almost by the minute. It was golden to start off with, then pink, then became this magnificent lavender colour later on. I'm so thankful I had my Manfrotto tripod and Canon 5D with me!

The larger this image is, the better is looks, so please view it in the lightbox. I wish I could post up the full 5500px version of it, but then people might steal it. I'm really pleased with how this shot turned out and I think it's one of my best HDRs so far.

City Dusk

It's been a while since I've posted a London cityscape at night and, as that has been regarded as my speciality by some of you, here you go! This was a fantastic evening's shooting, one of the best I've had in a long time. The sunset and light that night was unbelievable.

I not only loved the sky here, both clouds and colour, but also the juxtaposition of the new and old. The central focus is on the City of London, with The Gherkin, Tower 42 and Heron Tower, but creeping in at the side is the Tower of London. A lot of towers in one photograph I guess. In the coming weeks I'll show you some more shots from this session and I'm really happy with them.

This shot was part of an HDR workshop that I ran for my friend Geoff. I used it as an example of settings and workflow and ended up really liking the result.

This looks pretty special when viewed in the lightbox, as it's a night scene and has loads of detail.

Battersea Power Station

I love getting shots tight against bridges with a wide-angle lens. I love the lines that it gives. Although Battersea Power Station isn't as well-known as the Houses of Parliament or as architecturally beautiful as St Paul's Cathedral, it is still an iconic landmark in London (albeit South London...).

I was going through shots from my photowalk with Murphyz and I asked on Twitter which shot I should put up. Without hesitation, Vulture Labs said Battersea Power Station. "Can't get enough of that building".

This shot was taken at around 23:00 hours on a Sunday night and used my remote shutter release for longish exposure of a minute. I like how, despite the light pollution, you can still make out stars. It's surprising how much they travel in this short amount of time! One of my favourite things about this image are the reflections of the lights across the Thames.

Oberbaum Bridge

As you know, I like talking photos of bridges, whether they're simply in the background, in the foreground, the main feature or an indoor bridge.

I asked people what to take photos of in Berlin, and my friend Anna said she wanted a photo of the Oberbaum Bridge (Oberbaumbrücke). She actually wanted one at sunset, but you get what you're given. I checked the map and found out that it was 2 mins from my hostel. How handy.

It was possibly the darkest place in the entire world here. I could barely see what I was doing. I decided to wait for the U1 U-Bahn to travel from Warschauer Straße to Schlesisches Tor, so that I'd have an interesting light trail along the upper deck of the bridge.

I've posted some photos of the Charles Bridge before, some subtle, some not so subtle. This photo gives more of an idea of the location and surrounding area. I like how Prague Castle on the left stands out so much. I think the lighting on the bridge itself looks wonderful in this photo. My hostel was only 5 mins from where I took this, so it was pretty handy.

Plus, photos that include a bridge are pretty cool.

Astronomical Clock Tower

On my first day in Prague I wasn't quite sure what to do. I wandered to the busiest looking spot in town, which turned out to be Old Town Square. Here there was a lot of Easter markets. Overlooking all this was a large clock tower. I figured this was a good way to see the area and get my bearings.

When I got into the tower, I looked up and loved how this lift looked. You can either walk up the spiral-esque ramp or take this lift. I did the best of both worlds; I took (a photo of) the lift and walked up the ramp. This lift shaft was actually incredibly dark, so I had to crank the ISO to 400 and use f/5.6 to get a handheld HDR. That's not noise at the top of the lift, it really does look that weird.

Once I got to the top, the view was great and it was reasonably sunny, unlike the rest of the time. I was hoping to get up her later on for some night shots of Prague, but I didn't have enough time, as I spent too long eating delicious goulash.

This looks stranger on black (Press L) and making this a favourite (press F) means that part of the charm of this photo belongs to you forever.

All Aboard the Night Tram

Wherever I am, whether it's Italy, Denmark or London, I like to get some candid and street photography. I feel it sometimes helps to show the essence of a place, or a least you can get some interesting portraits and scenes out of it. Prague is no exception.

I was on my way down from a hilltop observation tower to the Charles Bridge one night when I passed this tram stop. I took a quick snap, not expecting much, but I ended up quite liking this image. I'm not entirely sure why, there's not much going on, but I love the light reflections on the rain-soaked cobbles and the bright blue inside of the tram, as well as the how packed it is. Again, this is one of those shots I don't expect many people to like, but I really like it and that's all that matters!

Looks nicer on black (Press L) and press F to favourite this, although I doubt many of you will!

Tower 42

Architecture is one of my favourite things to photograph. Luckily London has some wonderful buildings. Sadly, very few of these buildings are tall. Of these few buildings, a lot of them are in The City; An area that I have not photographed properly yet.

To give you a break from the Houses of Parliament, here is a shot of Tower 42, formerly the National Westminster Tower. It is the second tallest building in the City of London (next to Heron Tower) and stands at 183 metres tall.

Strangely, the entire sky in this part of town has this amazing red sheen over it. I'm guessing that this is due to light pollution.

I've previously posted a shot of Earth Hour, the WWF-organised hour where everyday folk are meant to turn off their lights to raise awareness about climate change, with famous buildings and landmarks leading the way. The only building in this area of London noticeably taking part in the endeavour was the Palace of Westminster. This was pleasing, as I'm a big advocate for climate change action. This peaceful scene is in direct contrast to the spending cuts riots that were happening just around the corner while I took this.

Cannon Street Railway Bridge

On the way to meet some friends for dinner, I had ten minutes to spare, so I wandered around the area with my camera (I assume everyone else brings their camera to dinner in case they're early...) The Thames was looking particularly peaceful that night, and the sky even better. You can even make out stars if you look closely at the photo. You can also see St Paul's Cathedral poking it's head up in the middle.

It hard to get a photo around London without getting a bridge or two in it!

New Millennium Couple

On my ramble around the Thames in central London (the night I took a photo of The Shard and my selective colour shot from Tower Bridge), I also took this photo of the Millennium Bridge. Although I've taken this bridge before, I wanted to get a head on angle of it. To make things a little more interesting, I dropped down a bit from the usual viewpoint and noticed all the writing etched into the class, something that had passed me by before. I did my long exposures and when I looked at them, the only people to not have moved in almost a minute was this couple standing right in the middle, framed by St Paul's Cathedral.

'Neath the Shadow of Vesuvius

I arrived in Napoli early on the Friday morning and had seven hours to kill before my friend could meet me. I obviously went off exploring photo opportunities. I'd been up around the galleries and squares and proceeded to head towards the seaside. Within ten minutes, I found this amazingly picturesque little harbour. I must have spent a good half an hour or more at these docks snapping away. I love how the entire harbour has the magnificent backdrop of Mount Vesuvius. Expect a lot more photographs of this area!

London Sunset

Someone tweeted about a 'beautiful sunset in London', so I looked out the window, grabbed my camera and ran up to the 10th floor of my building! (I actually ran to the lift.) There happened to be a very, very, very important board meeting about to start and no-one was allowed up. I told the guy I would be as quick as possible, so he gave me 1 minute and if anyone was to ask, he hadn't seen me. What a guy!

I'm kicking myself that I didn't have time to set the ISO to 100 or get properly set up, but often it's more about trying to capture the moment while your boss's boss's boss's boss is about to arrive and fire you.
