As with a lot of long exposures, this looks better on black!

I spent ages researching a 10-stop ND filter for my Nikon 14-24mm lens and discovered that they're hard to come by, with decent ones being even more rare.

Thankfully I found one I thought I would be happy with and took it out for a test drive.

This was a week or two before my trip to Iceland, so I wanted to take my new gear out for a bit of a test run around London. I wasn't going to post this shot, but it's grown on me, so here you go.

The Lion City

For such a large city, the centre of Singapore can be pretty quiet sometimes.

I had wandered down to the marina for sunrise I was shortly confronted by this fantastic blue hour. Apart from one other photographer who quickly disappeared, I was the only person around.

This provided a love sense of peace and serenity. I happily walked around picking out different compositions and waiting for the sun to rise up.

Thankfully, probably due to the rainy season, this blue hour had some very interesting clouds; I hate clear skies, even during blue hour or sunrise / sunset.

The title of this photo come from the nickname of Singapore, the Lion City, which is a direct translation from the Malay word Singapura.

Hong Kong Sunset

There is an iconic view of Hong Kong, one which I have taken myself. It's from this exact spot, but I decided to also post a nice day-time one as well. Although not uncommon, shots at this time from the peak are fewer and further between than the night photographs.

Myself and Greg had got up to the viewing point early, as we always do. As the sun started setting, we started shooting a few frames. Even though the sun was behind us, out of frame, there was still some lovely light on the city, stretching back into Kowloon.

Thankfully there were also a few clouds, otherwise the sky would have been mighty dull.

Singapore Sunrise

There are two things that I've become a fan of recently; long exposures during sunrise or sunset and the manual blending of images.

Luckily, this photo combines both of these loves!
I had wandered through town at about 05:30 and arrived at Marina Bay, which luckily only took me 10 minutes due to my reasonably central location near Clarke Quay.

I had figured this location would be very popular with photographers, but there was only one other guy there for sunrise. I took a few standard shots and then stuck on my 10-stop neutral density filter; something I seem to do during most sessions now (apart from night-time ones, obviously).

Once I spent a few minutes getting some shots of this fantastic sunrise, I had another walk, this time around the bay, back towards town. As I arrived around the corner, about 30 people arrived for a photowalk. You'd think that if you're going for a very early morning photowalk, you wouldn't arrive 10 minutes after sunrise?!

Technical Info

This was two LE shots, one at 100 seconds and one at 180 seconds. These were manually blended together using masking (layer, not luminance this time) to compensate for some blown out areas around the sun.

As some of you might have heard, I have now sold all my Canon gear and gone to Nikon. I'm not a particular fan boy of either; both systems have their good and bad points. I was looking to upgrade my year and a half old, second hand, Canon 5D MKII. I looked into getting another MKII, a MKIII or a Nikon D800.

After a lot of consideration about what I needed and my style of shooting, I settled on the D800. This is currently the best tool for the job (at least my job), plus it now allows me to shoot with the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 - arguably the best ultra-wide-angle in the world.

To complete the lens line-up, I also have a 28-300mm, 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8.

Hong Kong

To round off our several weeks of round the world travel, myself and Greg finished up in Hong Kong, one of my favourite cities in the world and one which I hadn't visited for 12 years. It had changed a huge amount, yet was somehow still quite familiar.
Although this is the most common shot of Hong Kong, that's no reason not to take it, so we headed up to the peak (Victoria Peak) on the tram nice and early.

If you haven't been on the tram, do it. If you have been on it once, never ever do it again; the queues are hideous. At the top, we scouted the best location on the viewing platform and set up our tripods. We spent hours up there watching the light change and also trying to get our cameras in the right position. To get the railing out of the way, you need to extend the tripod neck out, but go too far and there is a huge channel of wind that will probably take your head off, let alone shake your camera a bit.

The Hong Kong skyline is fantastic from here. You can see buildings like The Bank of China, the International Finance Centre and the new and huge International Commerce Centre. In fact, the latter was almost next to our hostel. For those of you that know Hong Kong, our hostel was in the magnificent grandeur that is the Chungking Mansions. Yes, we're that fancy. At least it's opposite Tsim Sha Tsui Station (which I had to keep pronouncing for Greg).

I want to say a big thank you to my uni friend Bex, who took us out every night we were there, lent us money and showed us a fantastic time. We saw some of the most awful going out streets in the world (Lan Kwai Fong), but also found some amazing places like a little speakeasy we ended up in one evening / morning.

My company has an office in HK and it's very tempting to move out there one day for a while...

Night-time Norway

If you recognise this viewpoint and location then bonus points for you, as you've obviously been paying attention. This is overlooking the city of Bergen in Norway. I love a good cityscape, whether it is at sunset or in the dark, cities can look wonderful. I've called this night-time, although it's also very much in the blue hour. That doesn't give a good aliteration though.

It was only when I was processing this photo that I noticed I had captured light trails from the funicular coming up the hill. It's only a tiny part of the overall image, but I really think it adds to it. You can just make out the very last light from the amazing sunset earlier. This was possibly the longest sunset I have ever seen. I swear we could still see bands of pink on the horizon at about 23:00. In a truly modest fashion, this photo looks tremendous in the lightbox.

I'm currently working on another video, so I hope to get that up before the end of the year.

See behind the scenes!

Another island shot, but this time I've moved from the Balkans to the Baltics. Myself and Greg had got up and hiked down to the coast for sunrise, expecting that it would be too cloudy to see much. And we were completely right. Absolutely no sun whatsoever. On the plus side, it gave a fantastic blue colour over everything.

I chose a small aperture to increase the exposure time and give the water a nice still, ice-like effect. The golden building you see on the horizon is part of an island fortress called Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

This shot really has more impact when you view it in the lightbox (Press L).

Bergen Harbour

I'm back from Norway and quite knackered! I have to say that Norway is incredibly expensive. I've actually found it to be more expensive than Denmark or Sweden. Perhaps it's just Bergen, but I'd have a guess that all of Norway is expensive, as all of Scandinavia seems to have a massively high cost of living. Going into a local corner shop or 7-Eleven, you could regularly pay 3-4 GBP for a small bottle of water.

On our first proper night in Bergen (I'm excluding when we arrived at 01:00) we decided to head up Fløyen, one of the seven mountains of Bergen and the easiest to get to due to its proximity and its funicular, the Fløibanen. Upon arriving up here, myself, Greg and Victoria set up to get some amazing photos. Sadly, it had rained all day and the sky was very grey and cloudy. We waited around for about an hour with no sign of improvement. In my last few posts, I have stressed the importance of waiting around for the light and weather to change. We heeded my advice (for once) and began to see a small spot of sun on the horizon. Not promising to say the least. Suddenly, within the space of about ten minutes, this band of pink stretched across the horizon and then hit the tops of the clouds nearest to us. It was certainly one of the oddest sunsets I have every seen, but still pretty spectacular.

We stayed up here to get some night-time shots of the city and even when it was pitch black here, you could still see some pink on the horizon. It was the sunset that never wanted to go down. Its persistance was admirable!

There is simply no way I'll ever catch up on your photos, but I'd like to thank everyone who commented while I was away; I have read every single comment and checked out the photostream of everyone who followed me. Sadly I do not have time to reply to every one individually, I wish I did.

Fishing Boats

This seascape is a slightly different, more open scene than my previous shot of the harbour. Which is better? I couldn't tell you. I don't often get to shoot open water, so whenever I get the chance, I take it.

I spent a large part of my time in Napoli around the seaside, and most of that time was in this little harbour. Fantastic place. If you're ever in the city, head down here and get some photos.

I know I usually write more of a story, but I'm really tired at the minute, so this will have to do you. Most of you don't read this anyway!

Lone Tree Bay

On our quest for the perfect sunset location in Napoli, we had gone up to one of the viewpoints overlooking Golfo di Napoli. I was struck by this fantastic looking tree in this person's roof garden. It really stood out behind the deep blue Italian sky. There was a contrail behind it, which I thinks adds to the effect and leads your eye into the photo. (It's always nice when planes make an appearance in your photos.)

I also really like the colours of the layered buildings in the foreground. Looks better bigger. (Press L)

Twilight on the Coast

After the hustle-bustle of the London riots, I thought you'd want some peace and calm. Emyli really likes this one, so I'm putting it up.

I'd been up on the local hillside taking photos of the setting sun. Once this had gone down, myself and Sara got in the car and headed back to the city centre. As we came around this corner, I loved how the almost-set sun had covered the bay in this blue tone. The lights on the opposite coast by Mount Vesuvius seemed to glow incandescently. Then the lights on the streets below came on and gave that same, warm glow. I didn't have anything to lean on, so I upped the ISO and hoped for the best.

It doesn't look like much now, but please view large to see the beauty, as it's quite an understated photo.

Whole Locka Love

Love locks are commonplace in a growing number of countries (although less so in the UK from what I've seen). Romantic couples will write their names, and often the date, on a padlock and attach it to a public space, usually a fence or a bridge. At this location, there was a large number of these, mostly likely due to the fantastic view over Golfo di Napoli and on towards Mount Vesusvius in the background.

I wanted to get a nice close up of the locks, but also give you a sense of where and why. Please excuse the pun in the title, I couldn't resist it!

'Neath the Shadow of Vesuvius

I arrived in Napoli early on the Friday morning and had seven hours to kill before my friend could meet me. I obviously went off exploring photo opportunities. I'd been up around the galleries and squares and proceeded to head towards the seaside. Within ten minutes, I found this amazingly picturesque little harbour. I must have spent a good half an hour or more at these docks snapping away. I love how the entire harbour has the magnificent backdrop of Mount Vesuvius. Expect a lot more photographs of this area!
