Been away from Flickr for a spell but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy. This image from a shoot for Long Branch in the Shenandoah Valley. I will do my best to get up to date with everyone's work soon.

The north driveway leading to the residence at Long Branch is beautifully lined with four board fence....
Located in Clarke County, Virginia (near Millwood), Long Branch is one of the most historic and elegant antebellum houses in the lower Shenandoah Valley. Built in 1811, Long Branch became a major provider of wheat for the region and beyond. In more recent history it also became well known for its herd of thoroughbred racehorses.
The historic house remains magnificent, the grounds are stunning and the views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains and nearby Shenandoah River are spectacular. Welcome to Long Branch and to Virginia’s Hunt Country.

A day of unsettled weather at Jenny Lake brought moments of clear sunshine and obscured mountain peaks along with torrential downpours. The wet rocks along the shore were in direct, unfiltered sunlight that extended about 50 yards out into the lake while rain and snow did it's thing on the mountains. For me, bad weather is really the only way to get great drama in images during the middle of the day.

How many times have you gazed at the sky? Mesmerizing childhood afternoons lying on the grass under the hot summer sun...you could "see" things in the clouds. Even to the point that you thought you could see good and evil moving around. As we got older, and wiser, we learned that clouds were just...clouds...a visible collection of particles of water or ice suspended in the air, usually at an elevation above the earth's surface. Perfectly logical and sound science.

But for some reason I still see things in them. :)

Tom Lussier Photography posted a photo:

"I think that I cannot preserve my health and spirits, unless I spend four hours a day at least - and it is commonly more than that - sauntering through the woods and over the hills and fields, absolutely free from all worldly engagements." ~ Henry David Thoreau

Henry really knew how to spend his time! :)

The same tree as my previous post a few minutes later and from almost underneath it. I wanted to make the tree the star in this one so I set up my tripod a foot off the ground and shot up into it. I always have this quote in the back of my mind:
"A good photograph is knowing where to stand. ~ Ansel Adams
This one from the summer of 2011. I've posted a couple of similar shots from this particularly nice evening but none that show as much of the sky.

Well the final processing on my Wyoming images is pretty much exhausted. This one was captured a few minutes before my previous post. I liked this composition at the time because it included the colorful foliage and flowers in the foreground. Looking through the viewfinder I liked the line of layers from foreground to background.

This is five bracketed exposures merged in Photomatix...then edited in Capture NX2 and NIK Color Efex Pro.

The Shenandoah Valley under a changing sky this past fall. I used a fisheye lens and slightly tilted it up from the horizon giving the valley an exaggerated curvature. The image covers 180 degrees of view. This lens is a lot of fun messing around with. :)

With the holiday season approaching I've found it increasingly difficult to get out and shoot. Managed a few shots, a couple of nights ago in the front pasture, of one of our horses grazing in the last of what little warmth the sun is providing now. My apologies for the dirt on her coat(kinda looks like noise...but it's mud from rolling). Really should have cleaned her up before shooting but this was pretty much "spur of the moment". Two minutes after I captured this the sun sunk below the clouds and Short Hill Mountain.

I am reposting this image because it, along with the comments image below, are finalist images in the Piedmont Environmental Council's Photo Contest. Voting is free and without any strings attached. :) Just click HERE.
*** The results are in(see the link below). Thanks to everyone who participated in the voting. Needless to say with so many talented photographers entering great images I am flattered at the outcome. :)
Original Post
The road that runs through this huge wheat field in northern Virginia had wildflowers growing on either side. Without them it was difficult finding a composition that felt right due to the expanse of cropland all around. :)

As I was composing this a bright yellow and black Goldfinch landed on the big Thistle flower in front and looked at me as if he'd never seen one of my kind. A second later he was flitting down the road, toward Bull Run Mountain, looking for the next stop.

A fisheye lense view at one of the overlooks along the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. This lense sees about 180 degrees so a little distortion is to be expected. The wall that was at my feet was actually straight. :)

As Frodo and Sam crested the hill they looked back on the Shire...

Another image from my Skyline Drive trip recently. Similar to two previous posts but I just can't help myself from sharing these! :)
The Nikon GP-1 GPS unit I have works great recording the X, Y and Z to the EXIF data. The elevation data for this image came in at 590 meters(1,935 feet) above sea level.

So glad Sandy is gone. I hope all of my east coast friends are getting things back to normal today. If not, my thoughts and prayers go out to you!

Please do take a moment and click on the image to see it large on a black background. Or open it in "Original" size. I downloaded a slightly larger version than normal because of the detail in the valley. Thank you in advance for looking at my work and for any comments, critiques and favorites. :)
