Story: Last time I shot a can of Redbull I was working on adding splash images to my book and I knew right away the shot I wanted to do. However I also lamented the fact that it didn’t directly include a nod to their cartoon commercials. I always enjoyed those commercials and when I think of Redbull advertising that’s what I immediately bring to mind even with all the other things they have done over the years. When I finished the image I showed it to Redbull on twitter and they responded with a follow and a retweet. As time passed I continued to think about the “it gives you wings” tagline as well as how much I loved the design of Redbulls new line of flavors. I decided to shoot them a tweet and see if they would send me some of the new cans. They were happy to.

This time around I knew I wanted the images to be very graphic and I wanted to incorporate the wings. I considered creating the wings out of splashes but I decided instead to use the wings from the commercials. I have a few images where I am incorporating vector graphics and I think it's something fairly unique about who I am as a photographer. The original plan had been to have all three of the cans and background colors in one image but after I finished all the images I couldn’t bring myself to shrink them down to fit all three into one image. I love how graphic they turned out and I really wanted each can to shine on it’s own.

Lighting: I pretty much always do either dark field or bright field (check out light science and magic) lighting for bottles and cans and this was no different. In this case I actually shot it against a black background, though not pure black, because I knew the final backgrounds would be closer to black than white. Since I wasn't going to have a ground plain I placed the can on top of a lightstand (if anyone can link me to a platform designed to top a lightstand that would be great) in order to avoid the reflection of the ground plain. Then there is a softbox turned horizontal with a dynlaite 2040 head directly perpendicular to the lens and directly behind the can. This could work as a pure white background if I wanted a white background but instead there is a piece of black construction paper behind the can. It's placed ever so carefully and folded just wide enough that it gives the dark edges. There is also a dynalite 4040 head in a beauty dish from above. The over!
head light is giving the highlight that falls off towards the bottom and the spill from that as well as the light from the softbox is bouncing off of white foam boards on both sides. The foam boards are inside the petals of the lens hood on the lens then angled back at around 45 degrees so that the have a small gap between the other end and the side of the softbox. Above and below the lens there is white paper closing the gap between the foam boards.

I love how graphic they turned out and I really wanted each can to shine on it’s own.

If I had to pick a favorite of the three this would be it. I love how it almost looks like it could have been drawn in illustrator.

Story: My time with the borrowed pocketwizard gear is going faster than I had hoped. One of the things I definitely wanted to do while I had them was throw around some liquid on a large scale. Yes I can use my speedlights with their nice fast flash duration but that's limiting to say the least. That means if I want to stop motion with the big lights it's going to have to be while I still have a pair of Pocketwizard TT5s to play with. So superbowl day I went to work in the studio. After a long day of shooting I had a whole collection of shots to play with and this is what I put together.

Lighting: I am using a dynalite m1000wi pack turned all the way up. Each bank has one 2040 head in a medium softbox with a grid and I am using one Pocketwizard Flex TT5 along with the built in receiver to trigger the pack. You get much better results with two TT5s but after about an hour of searching for the sync cable I gave up and worked with what I had. Some of the pieces of this were shot with the softboxes directly opposite each other and completely side lighting the water but towards the end I moved things around a bit. I found that the best results were when the water was backlit so for some of the pieces I moved one softbox as far behind the subject as I could while still keeping it from being behind the water in reference to the camera.

Story: I had a beard for a while but it was bugging me and I wasn't that committed to it so now I don't. I think if you really want a big beard you have to commit in a big way. There is a fairly long period of time where it's awkward because it's longer than is typical but it's not long enough to really be cool. I decided I wasn't willing to ride it out. Once I got rid of it I needed a new picture for all my profiles. I am also getting interviewed in a magazine, pretty excited about that, called modelixir.com and they needed a picture of me to go along with the interview.

Initially I had planned to use this in a 4x5 vertical crop similar to the last self portrait I had. In order to do that I actually used three shots from left to right and the uncropped image is around 30mp. Of course after all that I ended up cropping it to a horizontal 2x3 ratio that could have been done in one shot. Oh well. I am going to supply the magazine people with a 6x7 vertical crop so I guess it's nice to have both options.

Lighting: This is a three light setup that I saw on a profoto video and liked. I would have liked to add a 4th light but I needed to turn it down farther than was going to be easy and I didn't want to deal with it. The three lights are all in medium softboxes and arranged in a triangle around the lens. The top two are Dynalite 2040 heads and the bottom one is a 4040 head. The pack is turned all the way down and triggered via pocketwizards.

Story: From time to time Klout sends me something cool in the mail. Whenever they do I like to take it as an opportunity, a moment of inspiration and try and do a cool shot. This time around it was a box of Redbull. Around the same time I was doing some client work and realizing that my Dynalite pack had a flash duration that was deplorable. As I was working through that challenge I had the chance to borrow some Pocketwizard gear for a bit. As it turns out, a pair of the Flex TT5 units do an awesome job of allowing you to stop motion using your shutter. So with my newfound ability to stop motion and a box of Redbull in hand this is the shot that came to me.

Lighting: Nothing too complicated in terms of lighting here. I am using a Dynalite 4040 head with a beauty dish for the main light. It's just a tad camera right and above the camera. The background is a single 2040 head in the center of the frame and just below what you can see. For the splash the light is the same except for on the background where I needed to add a second 2040 head and move them so they were on the left and right side. The pack is a Dynalite m1000wi and I am using two Pocketwizard Flex TT5 units to trigger the lights and another Pocketwizard Multimax as a trigger for the camera. The splash is shot at a shutter speed of 1/5000.

The splash is shot at a shutter speed of 1/5000.

Story: I had actually wanted to do a location shot with more of a story but in the end she wanted something simpler and she won. I always love using this background color and checking out the color wheel a bit led us to pick the colors she has on.

Lighting: This is a pretty basic three light setup. From the camera position there is a dynalite 2040 head in a 60" umbrella camera right. Then farther back but at the same power there is a 4040 head in a softbox camera left and slightly behind the subject. The last light is a bare 2040 head pointed at the background. It's all connected to one m1000wi pack and triggered with a pocketwizard.
