Frozen Fingers

Since we have no snow in the city, I had to travel further afield this morning to find something winterish to shoot. Fortunately, there was an exceptionally huge volume of water shooting over Grindstone Falls, coating everything downstream of the falls in ice. But as the spray began to freeze on my lens, I had to abandon my gloves to wipe it off. After about ten minutes, the ice built up to the point that I couldn't shoot any more. And my fingers were too cold and numb to melt it off. But I got a few nice images, so I was a happy camper.

Tews Falls

Although Tews is a beautiful 41 metre ribbon of falling water, I think the best part is where it crashes onto the rocks at the bottom

Chedoke Falls

Flickr friend Ray Love invited me to accompany him on a hike to Chedoke Falls this morning. The creek is much warmer than the air, causing clouds of mist to rise from the plunge pool. This is the least steamy of the six images I shot. If you look closely, you can see streaks made by the falling snow.

With temperature finally below freezing, I set off to find some cool ice formations. Besides the ice formations, I found this ice-coated log sitting on a ledge halfway down Albion Falls.

Yesterday Flickr friend Ray Love and I visited three local waterfalls. A few of the trees are starting to show some fall colour in the Chedoke Creek gorge. Although conditions were great, I was too excited thinking about today - which marks 20 years since I received the awesome gift of the Holy Spirit! HBD to me!

A downpour two weeks ago sent massive amounts of water shooting over the cliff at Albion Falls. Not quite the same scale as the massive Flood of 2009 that swept away the ugly willow tree that used to grow down here, but it certainly freshened up the falls - sweeping away loose rock, creating a deeper plunge pool and pushing a mini-van sized boulder downstream

While on my way to the harbour last night, I decided to stop and shoot the well-known Hamilton landmark that stands overlooking the highway. This church was built in the early 1930s from limestone quarried in Indiana and Georgetown, Ontario.

With steady drizzle on Saturday afternoon, I was hoping to have this place to myself. But a family of waterfall explorers arrived moments after I did. Although they wouldn't stand still, they did provide a good sense of scale.

Although it was raining on Saturday, we were blessed with fog. So here are two foggy falls - Lower Cliffview Falls on the left, and Lower Westcliffe Falls on the right. This unique double waterfall is formed by the confluence of two separate tributaries of Chedoke Creek.

What a surprise to meet the real Billy Green after so many years of hearing about it. This litlle falls freezes solid in winter, and dries up as soon as summer weather arrives. So this is the first time I've seen it in operation.

Punchbowl Falls

The Punchbowl is rather dirty at this time of year. The huge ice volcano has mostly been washed away, although a section still stands behind the falls. Note the little creek running over the edge in the foreground. Tonemapped from a single image.

Taken two years ago, but never got around to posting... after shooting Sherman Falls, I spotted this cool S-curve in the creek when we were walking back to the car. Flickr friend Ray Love waited patiently in the cold while I slid down to the creek to fire off a few shots. Thanks, Ray!

Took these shots last winter when there was a tremendous ice buildup below the falls. This was a high as I could get climbing up from the bottom of the gorge - I wanted to show the water splashing off the frozen mound of ice.

Below the falls, Grindstone Creek bounces over huge boulders and fallen trees as it makes its way down the Escarpment. I'm always posting images of the falls, so I decided to
turn and shoot downstream in case anyone wonders what that view looks like. I think this looks better viewed large on black.

My camera has been sulking a bit this week after all of the excitement of seeing new snow in Banff last week. So after work I loaded it into my camera bag and set off for Hamilton. This is looking east from the High Level Bridge. Even more colour was happening to the west, so I dodged cars and shot from the other side of the bridge, too.

I like shooting the ice on the side of the gorge at this time of year - I'm fascinated by the shapes and colours. The falls are about 60 feet (21 metres) high, so you can see that those ice chunks are still quite large.

Driving through Waterdown, I had to stop to check out the ice build-up at Grindstone Falls. Fortunately, some Flickr friends were shooting from the base of the falls to lend scale to this image.
