An equisetum, or scouring rush, which likes flooded areas like roadside ditches, sandbanks and river edges. The fertile cone at the top distinguishes it from other equisetum. It grows about knee-height in masses because it spreads mainly by rhizome. It likes lime-rich sites.

The willows are in bloom. These are the male flowers of the pussy willow, which is dioecious, meaning each shrub is either male or female.

This is the fertile stem of field or common horsetail, just emerging at the side of the road. It will disappear and the ferny sterile green stems will persist through the summer.

This is the most common horsetail, and it is found throughout the northern hemisphere. Like all equisetums, it contains a high amount of silica, which made it an excellent pot scrubber in pioneer days.

It is often listed as a weed because farmers do not want it in their fields. I find it has one nice talent--it grows so thickly at the side of the road, it does not allow Dog Strangling vine or Garlic Mustard to take hold.

A jackpine-cedar forest, undergrowth is bearberry, reindeer moss, twinflower, blueberry and mosses. The soil is not deep, and most trees are not tall.

This lovely silvery plant grows on the beach and rocks of the Manitoulin alvar. This plant will flower and seed next summer. Beach wormwood is the primary host for Orobanche fasciculata (Clustered Broomrape), something I would really like to see.

Not all wormwoods are our friends. There are several exotic wormwoods, Artemesia, which came from Europe and Asia as garden plants, much admired for their feathery grey foliage. These wormwoods are now in the wild, doing very well, to the point that they are pushing native habitat aside. Most mentioned as invasive are Artemesia vulgaris, A. abrotanum and A. absinthum.
