Hagia Sophia, Istanbul.

Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) is a former patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, now a museum, in Istanbul, Turkey. Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture. It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, until the completion of the Medieval Seville Cathedral in 1520.

Hagia Sophia Seismic Retrofit in 16th Century

Hagia Sophia started showing signs of fatigue in 16th century. The building was extensively strengthened with the addition of structural supports to its exterior by the Ottoman architect Sinan, considered one of the world's first earthquake engineering and seismic retrofit projects. You can see the brown exterior columns of reinforcement structure supporting the orange-pink Hagia Sophia in the picture.
