It was built by a rich landowner on his property. The property is within the boundaries of Antietam National Battlefield, but the landowner outbid the NPS when it came up for sale. Not a horrible statue, but it makes a terrible precedent.

It says "Robert E. Lee was personally against secession [true] and slavery [total nonsense, he was a major slaveowner and a hard taskmaster; he even rented out his slaves and broke up families], but decided his duty was to fight for his home and the universal right of every people to self-determination."

Robert E. Lee was a good general and his postwar actions definitely promoted a peaceful end to the war and rapid national reconciliation. But his supposed anti-slavery views have been used for nearly 150 years to justify the "Lost Cause," neo-Confederate nonsense that "it really wasn't about slavery .... it was about defending state's rights .... the southerners took good care of their slaves ... the slaves were actually better off and very happy under slavery .... they were very loyal to their masters ...blah blah blah." Sad to see a statue made in the 21st century perpetuate this ridiculous tripe.

The seceding states made no secret of the fact that there was a single reason they were seceding -- to defend the "unique institution" of slavery. The idea that this was in favor of "the universal right of every people to self-determination" was a postwar invention of defeated Confederates, perpetuated by later generations of southerners who still weren't reconciled to civil rights laws. With all the historical research that has proven this point beyond a shadow of a doubt, it's sad to see the NPS allow this garbage on a statue within their park boundaries -- and to advertise the statue, and its message, on their web site.

This is a horrible precedent. Hey, if someone outbids the NPS for land within the authorized park boundaries, good for them. But then to allow them to put up their own a-historical monument with a patently untrue plaque, and later buy them out and incorporate the monument (and its bogus inscription) into the NPS inventory, is the worst sort of "money talks" management philosophy you will ever find. Shame on the NPS.

It's in the Cornfield, right at the corner of the battlefield road and Cornfield Rd., so the regiment presumably was in the 1st Corps.
