The extraordinary 'Gardens by the Bay' opened in Singapore a few days ago, and my pal Jet was kind enough to take me along to see them. These 'Supertrees', as tall as 50 metres, are marvels of engineering, fitted with environmental technologies that mimic the ecological function of trees.

Shortly after midnight, to a soundtrack that sounded like Vangelis meets Studio Ghibli, this light show began. My first thought was that these trees resembled the cities of elven races in Warcraft (it's a computer game, gran). After deciding that I wasn't going to get a better shot than this - especially handheld at half a second, as this was - I lay flat on my back on the warm concrete ground and wished I could be allowed to fall asleep to it.

I hope you all had a wonderful Hogmanay, as we call it here in Scotland, and that 2012 has a lot of joy in store for you.

I had a super night, but it was the first time I saw in a new year without Euan in I don't know how long. Thankfully, we were able to catch up for a few beers earlier in the evening, when I took this.

Rose English, The Salon Project

After landing in Edinburgh airport yesterday afternoon I jumped straight in a taxi to the Traverse Theatre for the opening night of The Salon Project, conceived and directed by my friend and regular collaborator Stewart Laing.

The List Magazine describes The Salon Project: "This uniquely immersive theatre project, presented as a real-life version of social networking, will transform the Traverse’s main theatre into an opulent simulation of a room in a fin-de-siècle home, and up to 60 audience members per night into period versions of themselves, kitted out in specially sourced costumes from wardrobe departments around Scotland...Costumed in their finery, participants will be led into the salon, where an evening of intellectual conversation and entertainment awaits."

I'm very excited to see the following shows. Where ordinarily in photographing theatre I would shoot a dress rehearsal and that would be that, I am photographing every performance of The Salon Project, and at one point in each show have to perform as part of what is happening in the salon.
