Studio portrait of William Tennant, a magazine and newspaper agent in Black River Falls, sitting in a chair holding a magazine. His artificial legs are propped on either side of him, the stumps of his legs exposed. Copy beneath the image reads, ""Mr. E. H. Erickson of Minneapolis, Minnesota made me these legs on credit, August 1, 1908. Since then I have made nearly every county in the state, and a good many in Minnesota, selling magazines and newspapers. My credit is good wherever I am known, and my legs have carried me thru a great many counties during the last four years."

Studio portrait of William Tennant, a newspaper and magazine agent in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, who lost both his legs below the knee. He faces the viewer, left hand on a draped support, right hand holding a magazine, pant legs shortened to reveal his artificial legs, wearing a suit and derby hat. Similar to image 24664, maybe a little younger, in front of same painted backdrop.

This image is part of a collection of over 6,000 glass plate negatives created by Charles J. Van Schaick. Van Schaick learned the art of photography after moving to Jackson County, Wisconsin. In 1885, he opened a studio in Black River Falls, Wisconsin and served as the town photographer for over 50 years. His work includes both studio portraits and richly varied and intimate snapshots of small-town, Wisconsin life. A portion of his photographic work is represented in Wisconsin Death Trip by Michael Lesy.
