Silent Night on Main Street at Christmas

Although a layer of fog isn't quiet as evocative of Christmas as a nice blanketing of snow, the fog did seem to "quiet" things this particular night, adding to the tranquility you can find in Walt Disney World at night, long after the hustle and bustle has died down and the other guests have headed home.

Fog like this is fairly rare at Walt Disney World, at least in my experience. Since this was our first night in the Magic Kingdom since visiting Paris, I sort of wondered if the fog followed us from there. I mean, look at the similarities between this photo taken on our last night in Disneyland Paris and the photo here. The fog looks about the same, right?!

Beach Club Villas

Stayed at Beach Club Villas for the first time on our recent Walt Disney World trip, and it's my new favorite Disney Vacation Club resort! We've now stayed at all the DVC resorts at Walt Disney World, too!

Tranquil Bridge to Cinderella Castle

One of my favorite places to find inspiration for my Disney photography is in the old collectible (not souvenir) Walt Disney World and Disneyland books (click the names for my reviews of each resort's books). While I'm not typically inspired by any particular single photos, in reading Walt Disney World: The First Decade on our flight, I noticed a lot of unique shots of Cinderella Castle (I also noticed a lot of shots with tree branches framing the scene--I tried to incorporate that in some shots, too).

While I didn't see this angle in particular, the photos I did see really made me want to find some interesting vantage points I hadn't before seen photographed. This led me to Liberty Square one night, where I wandered around, trying to find new angles. I finally found this location, a place from which I'd never photographed Cinderella Castle. I'm pretty pleased with the result, as I think it shows Cinderella Castle with a real sense of tranquility.

I don't know why, but to me it makes it seem less like a Castle in a theme park, and more like one tucked away in a European forest. Maybe I'm just letting my imagination run wild...

While all of its offerings are pretty straightforward fast food fare, I found something incredible at Taste Pilot's Grill.

Prior to World of Color, Sarah wanted some food from Cucamonga Mexican Grill, but nothing there looked all that appetizing to me. I had my eyes on the prize: the Aviator’s Chicken Sandwich with the Full Throttle Fries and a large Coke that I had seen earlier at Taste Pilot's. I am salivating right now just thinking about it. I think if I were to have a “last meal,” this honestly might be the meal I would pick. As always, I loaded the up with toppings from the Fixins’ Bar, and headed out towards the Pacific Wharf (which seemed much farther away when carrying a tray of food) where Sarah was sitting. It might "only" be fast food, but it really hit the spot that evening.

All things considered, I think this building is pretty cool. My shots of it sort of stink, as we were rushed out on our only night of shooting. Oh well, I'll try again next time!

Here's an addendum to the topic of my WDW Photography Blog Post, A Layman's Explanation of Creative Focal Lengths:

As I indicated in my blog post on WDWPhotography.com, we all have taken the "easy route" with regard to focal length on one occasion or another. One of my biggest mistakes with focal length, and one I didn't realize until our June trip, is that I almost exclusively use wide angle lenses at the Golden Hour and beyond. One night I began thinking about it: had I ever used anything longer than 30mm? One (one!) picture came to mind, but that was it. If I could find uses for the 70-200mm during the day, I was sure I could find some uses at night. I pushed myself to do so, because the lens was borrowed from a relative, and I didn't know when, if ever, I'd be back with the marvel of modern awesomeness.

So I tried to think of unique shots for the 70-200mm at night. Honestly, it was tough to think of ideas because it was such a foreign concept to me, but when I did come across a shot that I liked, I really liked it. It made me realize that despite the challenge, stepping outside my comfort zone with regard to focal length at night would be a very rewarding experience. One of the biggest reasons: night bokeh! While daytime bokeh from the 70-200, in my opinion is some of the best there is, nighttime bokeh has the added bonus of points of light. (Is it just me or do the spots directly behind Roy and Minnie look like two interlocking Hidden Mickeys? Perhaps Hidden Mickey and Hidden Minnie holding hands?)

While I probably got fewer usable shots from the 70-200mm per hour used at night than I normally do from the ultra-wide angle lens, as the trip passed, I became more comfortable with it, and saw that I was beginning to develop a better eye for night shooting with it. Just wanted to share this anecdote of how creative focal length choices, rather than my standard approach, has helped me with my personal shooting.
