Fresh from the garden: strawberries and romaine. Add a little goat cheese and sliced almonds; toss with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Easy peasy.

1924 O. M. Akers Cottage

This small cottage bungalow was designed by O. M. Akers in about 1923 for J. R. Blows, one of the bazillion builders that were putting up small houses all over Portland. It's in Ladd Addition which adds to its charm. Need to do a bit more research to confirm. It looks like the original trio of casement windows have been replaced, but it doesn't seem too much the worse for wear.

The Alberta Rider log house is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I wish it were actually guaranteed protection, but under current Oregon law ... maybe it will be preserved and restored or not. It depends on the owner ... and I don't have a lot of faith in the local school district.

Published in American Home as part of an article on building a new house. The architect was James Scovil and the house was built on Northern Boulevard, Roslyn, Long Island. Furnished by Bloomingdale's, most of the furniture was part of the Planner collection by Paul McCobb.
