I guess that as long as I'm on this pano kick I'll post this. I made it with my smartphone and stitched it using Microsoft ICE. Not too bad, unless you pixel peep, and as long as you ignore the stitching error on the rail (which I could crop, I suppose).

This is Western Michigan University's College of Engineering, and I was out for my lunch time walk (yesterday, I didn't get out today).

Tech: 36 images taken with a hand-held HTC One S, stitched using Microsoft ICE (which is free, if you want to try it!). It's almost kind of like a 19 megapixel image, from an 8 megapixel camera, except that my DSLR would have done better with one shot. But it's for the entertainment value more than the image quality.

Normally one doesn't like to get caught by the train, but this time it was different. This time Kim's parents were on the train, returning from a week in Las Vegas (where, apparently, they didn't win enough so that they didn't have to come back). So the blocked crossing provided us with a convenient place to park while we waited. For some reason there is no place to park at the train station.

Tech: Canon G11 shot through the windshield, tweaked with onOne Perfect Effects and onOne FocalPoint. The white balance was set for cloudy; that and the setting sun really boosted the warm tones of this scene.

Sloppy Pano

This is Western Michigan University's College of Engineering. The empty space on the right on the other side of the rails is a pond that sometimes has fountains going, but not this time of year.

Handheld panos often don't work very well; here's an example. I took enough pictures to fill in the missing foreground, but they didn't stitch correctly, so I deleted them. My excused? I paused for the person to walk through the picture, which possibly through off my alignment. I should have just started over after the person passed, but I was too cold and wanted to get to lunch.

We joke that when the company's "higher ups" come to visit Kalamazoo that the weather gets very bad. Here's an example. Four inches fell today to celebrate their arrival.

The old wives say that if March comes in like a lion it goes out like a lamb. But what happens if you have blizzards in the middle? 4 inches of snow today - this was made during my walk at lunch.

The needle is there in the middle - you can see it if you look closely.

First Presbyterian Church

Richland, Michigan

Settlers from Hudson, Ohio, came to the Richland area (then known as Gull Prairie) in 1830. A year later, a Presbyterian congregation was organized. Established under the 1801 Plan of Union adopted by the Presbyterians and Congregationalists for churches west of New York, the church originally served both denominations. The "Presbygationalists" worshipped in the log homes of the settlers until they built their first house of worship, a wood frame structure completed in 1837 on this site.

Dedicated on February 27, 1861, during the pastorate of Milton Bradley, this is the First Presbyterian congregation's second church. William Doolittle and Stephen Patrick built this Greek Revival frame edifice with its round-headed Italianate doors and windows at a cost of $7,000. The original bell cracked and was replaced by the present one in 1881. Until 1886 a slender ornate steeple stood thirty feet higher than today's tower. The interior was altered in 1952, but the original pews remain.

Tech: four images made at 2 EV intervals with a Canon EOS 60D running Magic Lantern. The images were merged in Photomatix to a 32-bit floating point tif. This file was processed in Lightroom 4. Final adjustments using onOne's Perfect Effects

The demolished strip mall where I spent many weekend nights with friends in high school, dropped many quarters into the arcade and saw Flash Gordon, one of the greatest, cheesiest movies ever made. I am so proud that my son now owns the soundtrack on actual vinyl.

Tech: HDR made with a hand-held Canon G11, autobracketed over three exposures. Merged and tonemapped with Photomatix.

Ming the Merciless, aka "The Man," tore down this crappy old strip mall to build a shiny new Lowes. Doesn't matter, really, except that I spent a lot of time here in high school, seeing, among other things, the 1980 Flash Gordon movie. It was also the last place Kalamazoo where one could see a movie for $5.

On the bright side, the Chinese buffet that used to be here moved to a new, larger building closer to the street, and has improved in all aspects. The owners of the theater couldn't raise enough money to move and rebuild, so they are selling flavored popcorn downtown so that people can have movie popcorn any time.

Almost everything else in here died long ago, but, based upon the number of cars that crept slowly by during my photo session, a lot of other people had some times here, too.

Canon A590 IS full spectrum, Hoya R72 Infrared filter. Color pretty much left alone but contrast and some other stuff was enhanced with onOne's Perfect Effects to make it a bit more dramatic.

The colors of not quite spring

A lunchtime walk at work. I've been mentioning how drab it is here, in the short "season" between winter and spring, before the snow is completely gone and before anything starts growing. I decided to do something about it and use *science* to bring some color early. This is a typical view; the long grass has been flattened by the snow.

Full spectrum camera + red filter = early Michigan color!

Tech: Canon A590 IS running CHDK. 590nm red filter installed. Red and blue channels were reversed in Photoshop and further, color-specific adjustments were made using a Hue-Saturation layer.
