nrhp # 87000887- Newburyport Harbor Rear Range Light is a historic lighthouse on Water Street near the Merrimack River in Newburyport, Massachusetts. It was built in 1873 as one of a pair of lighthouses for guiding ships up the river to the city's harbor, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
Range lights, or leading lights, are pairs of beacons used to guide ships and ensure safe passage. The beacons consist of two lights that are separated in distance and elevation, so that when they are aligned, with one above the other, they provide a bearing. The original range lights at Newburyport Harbor were maintained by private subscriptions. By 1872 Congress had appropriated funds to establish publicly maintained range lights after one of the previous pair was destroyed in a storm.[2]

When the range lights became active in 1873 local caretakers took responsibility for them. The job was later transferred to Plum Island lighthouse keepers.

"In 1993, the Turnpike Authority agreed to allocate funds to the construction of the connecting bridges after the Central Artery/Tunnel Project was completed. After several years with no progress, the North Bank Bridge Project received federal stimulus ARRA funding in 2009 and construction began in 2010. Construction was completed in spring 2012.

The pedestrian bridge is open to biking and rollerblading, in addition to walking or running, giving the public greater access to the parks. Prior to the bridge’s construction, traveling on foot from North Point Park to Paul Revere Park would take roughly 25 minutes. The new bridge, reduces the time to less than five minutes.

The 690-foot bridge curves under the Zakim Bridge and over the MBTA railway. The steelwork is metalized rather than painted to minimize maintenance. Energy-efficient LED light strips are installed in the bridge’s railings for aesthetics and public safety.

North Point Park completed two years ago is part of the New Charles River Basin, the “lost half mile” between the old Charles River Dam and the Charlestown Bridge. North Point includes a broad pedestrian path along the water’s edge and a tree-shaded bikeway along the land side of the park, and is the third park to be completed as part of the Big Dig mitigation efforts, which also included the restoration and expansion of Paul Revere Park in Charlestown and the construction of Nashua Street Park in Cambridge and Boston."

This one taken from the Harborwalk: "The HarborWalk has a changing character as it winds through the city's waterfront neighborhoods and downtown district, stretching from Chelsea Creek to the Neponset River, through East Boston, Charlestown, North End, Downtown, South Boston and Dorchester. Part of the richness of the HarborWalk is its variety, reflecting the various activities and urban texture of adjacent land. The HarborWalk's design guidelines allow for the expression of diversity and a variety of active and passive uses.

The HarborWalk is designed to connect the public to a clean and restored Boston Harbor. The HarborWalk links the water's edge to the city's open space system.

Along some areas of the waterfront, the HarborWalk extends into maritime industrial areas. In these areas the HarborWalk may be a series of observation points, rather than a linear path, where the public has the opportunity to view at close range the exciting operations of a working industrial port. At certain locations and times, there are limitations to public access in order to protect public safety and industry operations.

The HarborWalk also connects to new and existing networks of inland trails, which will link the HarborWalk to established parkways and open space networks, including the Emerald Necklace system, the Charles River Esplanade, and the Rose Kennedy Greenway. In the future, the South Bay Harbor Trail will offer Boston residents a new and exciting way to access the Boston Harbor on foot or bicycle. The trail will extend from the Ruggles MBTA station and winds its way through Lower Roxbury, the South End, and Chinatown to reach the HarborWalk at the Fort Point Channel."
